"Is there someone at the center of all this?" you ask Julie as she lies in her hospital bed.

"Okay Gloria," she says, dropping your title. "You know the new volunteer coordinator, Brenda Box?"

You look vaguely at her. "Right, family money in hospital supplies? Adhesive tape and things?" you say. You recall a presentation where she was moving over from fund-raising to join the hospital to coordinate the candy-stripers.

Julie nods. "Right. She raised so much money over the past four years, when she asked about taking over coordinating the volunteers, the administration said 'Whatever you want, Brenda.'"

You frown. "Well, it worked," you say, "We have plenty of candy stripers now. I mean, there aren't any more high-school girls, but Brenda seemed to find plenty of college girls."

"Connections," Julie said. "Her old sorority. Her old lesbian sorority. She finds them volunteer hours they need if they're pre-med, or pre-nursing, or just for community service points."

You look blank. "A little strange, but that sounds fine, as far as it goes," you say. "Connections make the world go round." Certainly your husband would agree. "But we're a little out of the way here."

"Brenda finds them places to stay and lets them come over to her house and party any time," Julie says.

"So how did you get mixed up in all this?" you ask Julie. "With Cara? You're married, for heaven's sake. Brenda is, too."

"Brenda..." Julie starts to say. She blushes and shakes her head. "Sorry."

"All right," you say. "Brenda Box, then."
