Chapter 26 by Emma_Zail Emma_Zail

Find somewhere to bed down.

A new day, a new discovery.

You're up with the dawn--not surprising given how long you slept yesterday evening. It had been an eventful two days: from first earning your name, to the Bard, to Ana and Dwight and Huny, and finally Masochist and the three Bimbos (Ooh! That would make a good children's book for your future imps!) and the fairies that came after. How everything important could pack into just two days was beyond you; or maybe, any two days could have been like this if you had been strong enough to live through them before.

Not wanting to wake Fay yet, you rise carefully. The weight in your stomach is a little cumbersome, but comforting, too. This is something else you never had: someone who wanted to stay with you. You rest a hand on the little bump she makes on your belly and smile.

Go ahead and move. I don't mind.

'Are you sure? I'm in no rush. Thanks to you girls, I have the entire day to find someone.'

I'm sure. As long as I can stay here until the fighting starts.

'Sure hun.'

You spread your wings and rise into the morning sky. The day feels chalk-full of opportunity. You start moving through the trees, eager to find your first encounter.

An hour later you have discovered something that never occurred to you before: heroes don't come into the forest at dawn. No fanfare plays in the quiet hours of the morning. Not once. Why not? This had to be the best time of day! Admittedly you rarely had the chance to enjoy it; most of your lives had been late nights trying to not be killed by the more nocturnal heroes, then dropping somewhere in exhaustion and not coming to until the late morning--if you came to before someone found and killed you.

Bad experiences as a weak, nameless monster aside, the morning air in your wings felt wonderful. There was just a bit of a crisp chill brushing over your exposed skin, almost teasingly. This is something you were going to make time to enjoy more often.

Sounds awful. Warm is better.

'You'd have to come out here and feel it yourself.'

I have before. Don't like it. Besides, I'm so soaked right now it would be freezing.

That wasn't something you had been thinking about. 'Um...do you want a bath?'

Only if it's warm.

'Well, it looks like I have nothing better to do. Let's see if we can find one.' You resume searching, but now with a different goal in mind.

Do you find a warm bath?
