The Portals

Where Will the Portals Take You?

Chapter 1 by TestSubject57 TestSubject57

Jason Kingston wasn't anyone special. He was a 25-year-old guy with brown hair and blue eyes. Jason lived in the boring little town of Johnsonville, Kansas, a town so boring and insignificant that you couldn't even find it on a map. Everyone who lived in Johnsonville was boring and dull. They were all just plain and average. Jason longed for interesting people and places and most importantly, he longed for hot, sexy girls who would give him even the tiniest hint of acknowledgement.

It was a dull, rainy Sunday afternoon and Jason was exploring his grandparents' place outside of town. Both grandparents had passed away a few years back and Jason had inherited the place. It was a large, two-story building with a basement that was quite old. While Jason had been living here, he'd only ever used the ground floor. Now, he was bored and thought exploring the house might be a nice diversion from the boredom.

Jason walked down the steps into the basement. It wasn't as creepy he thought it would be. It was all cement, but it had electric lights and was devided into rooms. As he started checking doors, he found most were storage or access to various utilities like water, power and sewer. Finally, at the end of the hall, near what Jason thought was the back of the house, was a single simple door.

Expecting just another small closet, but wanting to be thorough, Jason opened the door. Inside the small cuboid room was something entirely unexpected. At the back of the tiny closet was a swirling portal to the unknown. It had a silver aura to it and had what appeared to be an opaque film in the middle blocking Jason's view of what was beyond. Well, Jason had wanted an adventure, something exciting and interesting to do.

He thought about testing the strange portal with various objects first. But he was bored and Johnsonville was so dull, so he just jumped right through. What he found on the other side was a huge open field with seemingly no end in sight. It would've been just another horribly dull place if not for all the portals stretching as far as the eye could see in every direction.

Jason was impressed. Hundreds if not thousands of portals that lead who knew where. The possibilities were endless. He knew that he was going to have a lot of fun exploring this. First though, he had to do a few things before he went jumping through portals willy-nilly. The first thing was to go back to his boring world and collect some supplies.

Jason had inherited the house and a fair sum of money from his grandparents. He also made money as video game streamer and youtuber. Making sure to lock the house before leaving, he went into town to the local hardware store. There, he bought a few metal fence posts, a blue tarp, some zip ties, several basic wooden signs, some spray paint, a set of letter stencils and some of those adjustable fences you see at the theater box office that denotes the waiting line. Then he went back to the house and threw together a couple water bottles, some food, a first aid and a hunting knife into a backpack. Once he had that, he hauled everything down into the basement and to the portal.

Then he started hauling everything through the portal. Once that was complete, Jason got to work. He set up the adjustable fence around the portal to his world. Then he put up the metal fence posts and zip-tied the tarp to them as a flag. Finally, he broke out the stencils, spray paint and one of the signs. On the sign, he simply put the word Home.

With all that done, he was ready to explore. He'd made every precausion he could think of to find so he wouldn't get lost. He considered potential plague worlds and radiated worlds, but hoped those weren't what the portals lead to. He didn't have the resources or patience to test the portals for any of that. Instead, Jason threw the backpack over a shoulder and, picking a portal at random, stepped through.

What Kind of World Does He Find on the Other Side?
