The Divinity Within the Man

The Divinity Within the Man

When a human figures out he is housing a god inside himself

Chapter 1 by Avriit Avriit

In the modern world, John was a normal man working a menial job at a large corporatized store. He lived with his girlfriend, who he no longer cared for, in a house they bought just to move out of his parent's house. As much as he grew indifferent about most things in his life, he knew he was stable and wouldn't ruin it unless either he won the lottery, or if his fantasy of godhood was right. John always felt like he had something, or someone, inside of him. Like he was good by nature with some wicked temper, but there was something in him that craved desires and pleasures. This all boiled into years of conflict within himself until an idea formed that he agreed with.

John believed he had a god of desire/pleasure in him. He did not "know" who it was, just a name: Avriit. Nonsense is all he could describe this name as, because it doesn't even sound like it looks, it's pronounced: "Avreet." John never actually heard from this god. Nobody has, at least if they had, it was under a different name. And that thought sparked a new series of imaginations over the years that involved this god getting out, joining their mind with John's, and the new god bringing magic back to the world and answering the prayers of their soon-to-be followers. John spent hours trying to figure out a way to get this god to agree, assuming the god couldn't get out without either a deal or some outside action. The god never spoke up, but John was ever more aware of their presence. In high-stress situations that caused spikes in adrenaline, particularly rage, John would black out for around a second or two and say something that sounded like his thoughts unfiltered. That was Avriit.

Avriit slept in their newest host, from whom they gathered was a white man of no real importance. As the punishment they were served so long ago, Avriit sleeps in mortals, experiencing everything almost dreamlike but still unable to interact or break free. Avriit still remembers how all-powerful they were. The title god of chaos or desire was a narrow vision of the whole picture. Avriit can "wake up" for bare moments in extremely high adrenaline, a revelation of the past couple of centuries, as more people feel anger deeper; or at least Avriit's hosts do, regardless of the whole populace. John was no different except that this was the first mortal to sense Avriit so deeply, which is a possible sign of minor insanity.

John was leaving work thinking of the normal fantasy of being godly and answering prayers, all while his girlfriend walked beside him since they worked at the same place, nothing new. As they reached the parking lot, John's thoughts shifted to pleading with Avriit to take the deal to join their minds to be free, as he had before, and expecting another bout of silence in response. However, a car going extremely fast suddenly started to screech straight for John, spiking his alertness and making his heart beat a million miles an hour. Time seemed to slow in his perspective though his body moved just as slowly as everything else, and with all the adrenaline causing this, he lost his vision like when Avriit woke up in the middle of the pleading thoughts and all that came from his mouth this time was just "I agree..." John's and Avriit's perspectives changed with this. They were no longer separate, all of John's human feelings, memories, and standards mixed with Avriit's powers, memories, and noncorporeal form. They were both active, which turned them both into something new. In their new minds, they decided that they would take the god's name Avriit as their new/continuing name.

The new Avriit opened their eyes, time now literally frozen rather than an adrenaline rush. With a car right next to them screeching their breaks, their girlfriend who they know they'll be breaking up with in mid-scream, and the realization that their power has only been growing inside the host's bodies.

What is Avriit's next move?
