Chapter 12 by Acorn142 Acorn142

Which do you choose?

Wait for a report from Duncan

Stewart’s mind is soon distracted from his brother and his assignment because of the demands of his own duties. The day is consumed with reports to read, ministers with whom to meet, proclamations to be signed, and a never-ending parade of official delegates bringing their greetings and condolences. Much to Stewart’s surprise, he is also deluged with a seemingly-endless onslaught of applicants for various offices around the kingdom.

Several days pass, and he has all but forgotten about Duncan. He is sitting in one of his studies, going over the latest pile of official papers with Lord Norbier. He sets a paper on his desk and rubs his eyes, tiredly.

“How many of these positions do I have to fill, Norbier? Are you telling me that the decision of who is to be Deputy Assistant Master of Drains and Canals in the Stirling District is a matter that requires the attention of the monarch? Can’t I just delegate this to someone else?”

Norbier’s face is one of tired patience. “As I explained, Your Majesty, this is the way you keep your finger on the pulse of the Kingdom. These officials owe their livelihood to you, and so they will act in your best interests. If you delegate this responsibility away, you will lose your grip over these outlying provinces.”

Stewart rubs his neck. Ever since becoming king, his muscles seem to be forever tight and uncomfortable. He looks out the window. It seems like forever since he had the simple freedom to get on his horse and leave the confines of the palace, even for a few hours.

He happens to look out just in time to see Duncan’s carriage pull up in front of the main doors.

“Norbier, have you heard anything from my brother in the past few days? I gave him an assignment, but I have heard nothing from him since.”

Norbier shakes his head. “No, Sire. The Crown Prince has been uncharacteristically quiet in recent days. Shall I send for him?”

Stewart is about to say yes, but then looks at the pile of documents remaining that demand his attention. Perhaps it would be better to stretch his legs and go get a report from Duncan, instead.

What does he do?
