Stay where she is

Frozen in place, fighting to keep calm, Shuri stays perfectly still and waits. It might be another girl. Or a squirrel. She can't just assume every noise she hears is from a man ready to get his target.

She keeps her breathing as low as possible, letting the map drop so she has both hands grasping her stick so tightly that the surface feels slippery under her skin from her growing sweat. She stares at the map, now on the ground. She has to put it back in her bag, she knows, but she can't risk making a sound from her movements in putting the map back in her bag in the case it really is a man on the hunt.

Her mind races furiously as she calculates the risks, the pros and cons. If she puts her map back in her bag, the movement might alert the one who made the sound. Even if it's a girl, she's not sure if that alternative would be any safer. She can't trust any of the girls here, not when they've got her goal as well and most likely will be willing to throw her to the wolves if, or rather when, it comes down to it.

But if she doesn't put her map back in the bag, keeping perfectly quiet, then she'll lose the map if she's **** to make a run for it. Decisions, decisions. Too many ifs.

Shuri doesn't have much time to mull further, however, because it's at that moment she hears a voice and it's far, far too close for comfort.

"Come on out, girls, wherever you are!" It's a deep voice, unmistakably masculine, smooth with a deceptively playful-sounding tone. "I promise I'll make this easy for you if you give up now. I won't bite..."

There's a pause, and she sucks in a breath.

"...Hard," the voice finishes, and it drops low enough, so full of obvious lust, that Shuri feels a wave of nausea overcome her. Disgusting pigs, that's all the men on this island are. How can they be so depraved to be willing to sign up for the chance to **** girls on live television?

There's another snap of a twig, and she jumps. Surely, not enough for it to be noticeable, she reasons. The tree she's behind is broad enough.

That's what she thinks until the voice is there again, right in her ear.

"Hello."

It's a tall blond man, chiseled and built with prominent abs and pectorals, flashing a grin like a Hollywood star's. Shuri screams and falls backwards, scrambling away. In her panic, she fumbles with the stick and one of her flailing legs kicks away the map.
