Chapter 4 by TheDespaxas TheDespaxas

Does he find a loophole?

Ancestry cultural scholarship

KT had spend days, weeks looking online for colleges that offered scholarships high enough to let him attend and then filtered them to find one he would qualify for. He was no talented athlete, genius student or promising artist. As a white boy he was also out of luck for any kind of affirmative action help...

Unless...

This was a bit far fetched. He suddenly remembered something his great grandmother, a charming old woman he had a only met once when he was five, lived in an Indian reservation. She had died soon after his visit and this part of his heritage wasn't very prominent in his family, eeveryone else being considered as white people and living normal lives in cities. But he knew that all tribes had different rules for who was to be considered part of it and he had seen a lot of scholarship reserved for those who could justify being of native American descent.

A couple phone calls to his mother and aunt, a few hours on Google and he realized that he had struck gold. The tribe of the Mekapual had some matrilineal rules for citizenship. Being linked to them through his great grandmother, grandmother and mother made him and his sister members of the tribe, but only his sister's kids would be members unless he married a woman of the tribe.

Now with a certificate justifying his status (after a few email exchanges with the tribal council, he was able to receive one) he finally knew where to look.

Most of the scholarship he was now able to apply to were asking for the students to dedicate half their classes to courses on their ancestral culture or its preservation. While he wouldn't mind one or two classes on the subject he didn't want to focus on it too much.

He found it, Eaglerock college offered him a full course with the classes of his choices, with food and board included. It was sponsored by the anthropology department through a very rich alumni. The only requirements were a 2h weekly class on cultural heritage and a weirder one. The idea of this scholarship was to expose all students to more cultural diversity and required the recipients to attend the college dressed in the traditional clothes of their ancestors.

KT was sold, he was used to have very few clothes to his name. He could dress like a native American for a few years for free tuition and housing. He was not even **** to buy the costumes, they would provide him some for free, designed by the anthropology department to be as accurate as possible.

It wasn't hard to convince his mother to let him attend a good quality school for a few years since it meant that it would not cost her anything. She was even considering sending his sister there too, but she was currently working on an internship, so if she attended she would arrive a few weeks later than him.

A few weeks later KT was on his way to to Eaglerock college. Packing had been easy, a fully furnished room was awaiting him, his clotheswwould be provided, there was even a computer in each bedroom. He had packed a few toiletries, his phone, wallet, papers and tablet in his backpack. His mother had insisted that he did not pack a bunch of useless clothes since he won't be able to wear them on campus. He at least managed to get almost fully clothed for his bus trip. He was wearing a long t-shirt and a pair of sport shorts (to KT's dismay those were hand-me-downs from his sister and quite tight. Which was an issue considering the large package they had to contain.), he had lucked out for underwear, his mom had recently thrown away any that she found to be too old or damaged and that encompassed every pair he owned bar the ones he had on him the day before he left and of course they were still in the washer in the morning when he had to get ready.

He was now on the bus 5h away from his new life on campus. He spent the time reading the email from professor Abigail Jones, the head of the anthropology department, reminding him that they were expecting him and that after exchange with his tribe they had been able to prepare sets of authentic Mekapual clothes fitting for a boy his age.

Does he get there without incident?
