Chapter 4 by TheFallacyGuy TheFallacyGuy

What do you see?

The outpost... but...

You grow tired, and the sun is starting to peek over the horizon. It's still mostly dark, but the sand is getting a faint golden tinge.
But none of that matters, because you can see a small outpost of a town getting into view. It's small, but it's amazing. Civilization is at the cusp of your fingertips. Everything about this sight is magnificent.
The town is quaint. The town is filled with everything you need. The town is the answer to your prayers of staying alive.

The town is also on fire.

Emily quickly sets off towards the town, but you manage to grab her arm and reel her back in. She falls backwards on her ass, and looks dismayed up at you.

"Do that, and you will likely be killed." you state.

"But I have to help the town with the fires." she yells.

"Shush it. You'll just attract the bandits." you say calmly.

"Bandits?" her expression changes.

"You don't think that all of those houses catching on fire was just an accident, do you?"

She doesn't reply. She just look meekly into the sand. Apparently she did think that.

"We can't leave them to die..." she trails off.

"I wasn't planning on doing that either." you say: "After all, we need the town to survive ourselves."

It's clear on Emily's face that she isn't entirely happy for your more pragmatic reasoning for saving the town, but she knows complaining about ethics is pointless right now.

"All I'm saying is," you continue: "that if a wounded orc and an apothecary without any fighting experience is to help, then we need to approach this very cautiously."

The girl just nods in response. You slowly move closer to the town.

As you near the back of a house, you suddenly hear the loud noise of a gunshot and wood breaking. The house you've just reached the back of suddenly has bullet holes in it.
Emily falls backwards in shock. You immediately look back, and when you spot nothing, you reason that the bullets were shot from inside the house. Noting the lack of windows on the wall of the house, you come to the conclusion that those bullets weren't meant for you. You rush Emily around the corner of the house, and towards the next one.

You can now see the painted sign on the facade of the building.
"SHERIFF'S OFFICE"
No wonder there are gun shots going off.

You peer out into the main street, well, the only street of The Last Post. You count six corpses in total. Four of them bandits. Two of them civilians. They're both frog people. A man and a woman. Instinctively you look back towards Emily. She looks like she wants to scream. Her breathing is frantic and uneven. Her face has gone pale. You signal her to stay calm. First you need to see if any of the law enforcement are still alive.
You crouch-walk towards the open door of the sheriff's office, while staying out of sight of the door frame. Peering in you see two kobold men. They definitely do not look like they're part of the local law. They're in shaggy attire, cuts and bullet holes everywhere.
They are both armed and one is holding a bottle of absinthe with a flaming rag stopped into it.
Behind them a turned over table hides what could be another body. The only body part you can see is an arm sticking out from one of the sides of the table, and towards the other end there is a long curled scaly tail.
You ponder the value in attacking them. The risk is high, and there may not be anything to really salvage, and no one to really save.
You stare at the tail, and you see a slight twitch. You make up your mind.

"Why do we keep watching over this fucking place? It's filled with junk and shit. Nothin' to salvage." one of the Kobold men says: "We should be in the bar with the others and get absolutely shit-faced."

"Yeah, you're right." the other one agrees: "Fuck what Trisha is saying, let's get done here. The sheriff is dead meat anyways."

"Right. The bar had that little dark elf lass, I would really like to str-"

The kobold doesn't manage to finish his sentence, as you've picked up a small rock, and thrown it directly at the flaming liquor. The bottle shatters, and the flames spread across the entirety of the kobold holding it. The other one has dodged to the left to avoid the fire, and has directly thrown himself into a holding cell.
You notice that one of the boards of the outside wall of the sheriff's office is loose. You grab it and rib it straight off the structure. A couple of nails fly out as the board bends to accommodate the brute strength of the only part of your body that doesn't hurt severely.
You peer inside again. A kobold is writhing on the middle of the floor desperately trying to extinguish the fire that has engulfed him.
The other kobold in the cell spots you and fumbles his gun out of his holster, but his world blurs before he can take aim as a wooden plank connects with his face knocking him ****.
You move in quickly. You kick the fiery kobold in his face, knocking him out as well, before stomping him to put out the fire. You move him to the holding cell, you disarm both of them, and take the hat from one of them, and use it to put out the small fire on the floor before it spreads.

You wave Emily in, and as she rushes towards you, you examine the body behind the table. As you expected it isn't actually a body yet, but she is not that far from becoming one.
The sheriff is lying on her back. A bullet wound has penetrated her chocolate skin in the left shoulder. Her freckled face is in pain, and portrays her to be on the verge of passing out.
You move her raven ponytail away from her body to get a clear view of her wounds.
Other than the bullet hole she is burnt a couple of places, and gotten some deep scrapes. Her long brown snake tail recoils a bit in reflexive anguish. She is in a extremely shoddy condition.
She opens her eyes slightly and looks at you.

"Lana?" she asks.

"No." you reply shortly. She falls out of consciousness again.

Emily makes it over to you and lightly pushes you away. You give her space. She is more medically experienced after all.She quickly finds a medical cabinet, and starts pilfering it.
You're on your way out.

"Where are you going?" Emily asks.

"Securing the town." you answer nonchalantly.

"You can't do that alone!" she yells back.

"Well, if you see someone capable of helping, send them my way." you sarcastically reply. You pick up one of the revolvers and hand it to her.

"I-I haven't shot a gun before." she stammers.

"Well, today you might have to." you reply.

You take one of the rifles that are placed against the wall. You make sure it's loaded before heading out.
You make your way to the bar that the kobolds were talking about.
You quickly scan the scene, and you feel demotivated immediately. You really wish you hadn't taken as much damage from the Desert Killer than you have. Because even with a gun, what is inside the bar makes the scorpion look like a ladybug.
Ashen, tough-looking skin extends into two bat-like wings. Her curvy body is befitted with a spaded tail. Her piercing red eyes and seal gray hair are accentuated by two curled horns on the top of her dome.

This must be Trisha.

A succubus?
