Chapter 9 by Acorn142 Acorn142

What does he do?

Look for the imposter in his room

“I think you are right, MacTavish,” he decides. “If this imposter is in my chambers, he will be unguarded and unobserved.”

MacTavish looks at the prince for a moment. “Or are you only hoping he is alone, Your Highness?”

Stewart looks sharply at the man. “What do you mean?”

MacTavish sighs. “I have served the royal family for many years, Your Highness. My discretion is prized, but that doesn’t mean I am blind. Many a night I have seen what might have been a blue-skinned creature scaling the palace wall beneath your window.” He holds up a hand at Stewart’s astonished reaction. “And I have said nothing to anyone before this moment, my prince. You would not be the first royal to have blurred the barriers between the races. I say this not to judge or condemn you, but to simply ask how well you trust this — I assume it is a Ciguapa?”

“I trust her completely, MacTavish,” he immediately replied, but inwardly asked himself just how well he really knew her. True, he allowed her essentially unfettered access to his chambers and delighted in her sensuality almost every night, but he would be lying if he said their relationship was based on much more than the excitement and satisfaction finding such a dazzling female whose desire for sex nearly matched his own.

“Just be cautious, Your Highness,” warned the old man. “There are reasons the prohibitions against such unions exist. When we are on the other side of this crisis, I shall tell you how such things nearly destroyed your anscestors — and Mirantia along with them. But now we must be in haste if we are to avoid seeing the destruction of your family and the kingdom this very day!”

With that dire warning, Stewart leaves MacTavish to his work in the library and stealthily proceeds down the turret and toward his quarters. The activity level in the palace does not betray any particular note of urgency, suggesting that the conspirators have not yet escalated their attempt at power.

The prince makes his way undetected to the door outside his quarters. Hearing nothing inside, he must decide how to proceed. He can attempt to sneak inside, burst in without warning, or knock and see who answers.
