Let the phone go to voice mail

The man stood there staring at the phone. The phone display (000) xxx-xxxx as the caller. He had never heard of a phone number with zero as an area code or it with the letter x replacing the number. It was about a minute when the ringing stopped. Letting out the breath he was holding, allowing him to focus. Putting the phone to the side. He started looking through other pockets in the bag.

The first thing that he found was stacks of money. To his count, it was over five thousand dollars. He wonders if he has this much money, why did he decide to stay in an empty apartment. Next, were several passports with his picture. Each passport had a different name and state of origin. He figures that it won’t be easy to guess who he is. Lastly, was a handgun. Seeing it made him even more worried. He had hoped that he wouldn’t have to use it. All in all, seeing all the items made him think if he was a runaway, an escaped convict, or a spy.

Thinking about finding out his name was the most important thing to do. He decided to look through the passports. Reasoning himself that picking a name at random was a bad idea. He wanted to choose something that was connecting himself to right now that would be the better option. Knew that he was in Boston, Massachusetts. Not thinking about how he knew, it was just that he knew where he was. He hopes there is a passport that is Boston or at least near it. Finding what he wanted didn’t take long. His name will be John Cox.

To test if he was a spy. John held the gun in his hand to see if it felt familiar. He took various poses to help trigger a memory. Nothing happened, but he felt embarrassed about what he was doing. Re-examining the gun, he almost shot himself in the head. The sudden bang caused him to drop the gun. His heartfelt as though it was about to burst from his chest. Because of what he did, he is now afraid of guns. John concluded that he wasn’t a spy or an escaped convict. So that left him as a runaway. A new question started to form in his head.

“What am I running away from?” He asked out loud.

He didn’t have long to consider until a loud knock echoed from the main door. Thinking that it might be that landlord again. He walked to the door to see. This time it wasn’t a woman, instead, it was a muscular man who looked really angry.

“Do you know what you just did?” The muscular man inquired. “You just shot my TV and now it’s all busted. What are you going to do about it?”

John was startled by how angry the man was and the size of his muscles. They look bigger than an average bodybuilder.

“I said, what are you going to do about it, punk?” The man poked John in the chest.

Shaking his head, John quickly thought of something. He told the man to wait while he retrieves something from his bag. Leaving the door open, John quickly runs to the bedroom to grab one of the stacks of money. He hands the money to the man.

“Will that be enough?” John asked.

“This is enough,” the man said with a grin.

“Good,” John started to relax. “Can we just forget this ever happened?”

“You got it,” the man said while thinking that he might be back for more.

“Great. Now, just forget that this ever happened.” As soon as John said that, the man started to forget the reason he came to this apartment. Everything in the last few minutes was gone. He shook his head to see an average white man standing in front of him. He was confused that he wasn’t in his own apartment. Better yet than him in the hallway for some reason.

“Now that we are done,” John said. “Let’s not meet again.”

“What were we talking about?” The man said.

“Exactly,” John smiled as the door closed.

The man stood there facing the door. He still felt confused about what exactly occurred, yet he felt the stack of money in his hand. Then he decided to leave before he started to get a headache.

John looks through the peephole seeing the man walking away. He hoped that he made the right decision to give away that money. Now that he started to calm down, he felt a bit adventurous and hungry. It would feel better if he just sees if anyone would recognize him.
