Insightful Chat with Wonder Woman

“How are you adjusting to life on the Watchtower, Doctor Doe?” Wonder Woman asked you. Her pace was easy to keep up with despite her long legs. You glanced at the treadmills as the pair of you passed the gym area and wondered if the Amazon had to constantly exercise to maintain her amazing physique or was she just… always like that. Perfect.

“I’m adjusting pretty well,” you answered eventually, hoping she didn’t catch you staring. “It’s a little quiet down here in the sub levels but it’s nice. I mean I get to be in space.”

Now you had reached a long viewing panel to the outside of the satellite Watchtower and paused, the vastness of the universe before you and the hero. Wonder Woman didn’t seem all that awed by it, perhaps accustomed to this sort of thing by now. She nodded, still gazing out the window, her focus apparently on the faraway Earth.

“Not too lonely?”

“Not at all,” you replied, perhaps quicker and brighter than Diana had expected you to. She regarded you with a smile.

“Of course,” she nodded. “I’m glad. I was worried for Doctor McGee when she ended up stationed here with only the guardians for company. But with you joining the team I can breathe a little easier. You’ve helped me with a great many worries, Doctor. Thank you. ”

It was hard not to blush with Wonder Woman complimenting you and being so thankful to you. Then her hand was on your shoulder and you were made to look up into her piercing blue eyes. “John, I truly do thank you. I owe you a great debt. If there is anything you ever need, you can call upon me for aid.”

Your gazes were fixed for a moment, then you swallowed and nodded. The Champion of Themyscira took that as your acknowledgement and acceptance of her granting any favor she could help you with. Wonder Woman turned back to the window then, and you caught her briefly biting her lower lip but she became stoic once more watching over the world below. You decided to change the subject as well, hoping to scatter the thoughts of Wonder Woman doing favors for you. Those could be dealt with later.

“You and the Doc have known each other for a long time,” you said, not so much a question as it was a place to start a conversation. The hero’s reflection in the glass was a happy one.

“Yes. Tina is an old friend. She is very dear to me,” Diana confirmed. “Did she… tell you about us?”

At first you weren’t quite sure how much you should let on about what you knew, but there was a hint of hopefulness in the taller woman’s tone. And you remembered her teasing the doctor about it the other day.

“A little. She didn’t go into any detail or anything,” you admitted. You were ready to leave it at that but now the Amazon’s curiosity had been piqued.

“And this just came up in normal conversation?” she asked, an eyebrow raised but so were the corners of her mouth.

“Oh...uh… I kind of... asked Tina out. For coffee? And she… we had coffee,” you explained, painfully slowly as you were torn about telling Wonder Woman for some reason. You knew whatever thing the Doctor and the hero had going on before was in the past. Or at least you thought it was. Suddenly you felt nervous, as if you should’ve asked the Wonder Woman for permission first.

“That is wonderful!” Diana exclaimed, almost jumping, startling you with her unexpectedly enthusiastic response. “That’s wonderful!”

You didn’t know how to respond to that and she caught your blank expression. “I’m sorry, was that strange?” she asked, even though the smile on her face wouldn’t go away. “I’ve just been so worried about Tina since… that time. And I believe you to be a good man, John. Oh I surprise myself at how excited I am to hear about you courting her.” She stopped just short of fanning herself with a hand but she did seem a little taken aback by her own ebullience on the matter.

“Well … I’m not sure if I’m ‘courting’ her. I don’t know if I’ll even ask her out on a second date. The last one went okay but now Tina seems a bit…” you started, then left that hanging as the two of your recalled the doctor’s mood this morning. Wonder Woman dismissed your doubts with a wave.

“Tina can get a little terse when stressed,” she said knowingly. “After she’s worked through more research and cooled down, I think you should ask her out again.” There was a real sense of the hero being in your corner about this and admittedly it was rather confidence building. “That is if you do intend on pursuing her,” Diana added, crossing her arms, which probably wasn’t on purpose but made her bicep and tricep muscles flex in a distractingly aesthetic way.

You pictured Doctor McGee; your idol, but now also friend and colleague. You could picture her as more…

“I do,” you said then, and that reply to the Amazon’s question seemed satisfactory. “I’ll ask her out again.”
