Chapter 18 by Acorn142 Acorn142

What does he do?

Go looking for Felixia

Duncan doesn’t know how long he slept, but his senses tell him it has been at least an hour and probably much longer. The Felechon should have returned by now, and since she hasn’t, that can only mean that she befell trouble.

Securing the horses so they don’t wander off, he cautiously returns to the campsite. The fire has died down to mere embers, and there is no sign of the dwarves.

Resisting the urge to pick through the dwarves’ possessions, Duncan hurries in the direction they had taken in pursuit of Felixia’s voice. Even with his rudimentary tracking skills, he can see the signs of their hasty push through the thickets.

As Duncan enters a clearing he sees something on the ground. He stoops to examine it under light of the full moon and sees it is a crude canteen, very much like the kind used by the dwarves. He looks around the clearing for more items, but finds nothing, other than a wide, flattened swath of vegetation, suggesting that some massive thing entered the clearing from that direction.

Looking on the opposite side of the clearing, he sees a smaller, less uniform patch, suggesting that several smaller things hurried rapidly away. An inspection there revealed several pieces of torn clothing, conforming his deduction.

Duncan is about to follow the smaller path, wanting to keep his distance from whatever fearsome thing it was that frightened the dwarves, when he heard a something in the distance that sounded like a woman’s scream. He stopped, straining his ears, and it came again, this time clearly in the direction of the wider path.

Which way should he go?
