What does he do?
Find a place to hide and think
The headmistress’s order to remain right there is still ringing in his ears, but Alex needs some time to get away and think for a few minutes. He decides to duck out of the kitchen and look for a place of comparative safety. With his path into the kitchen blocked, he takes the only other alternative and ducks through a side door leading into a corridor.
He sees a door on his left, another on his right. Ahead of him is a stairwell, leading up and down.
