Each try for their own rooms

Alex decides the best course of action is for each of them to try to get to their respective rooms undedected. Elaine is pouting about not getting to go to Alex’s room with him, but he knows it will be the end of him — or at least the end of his testicles — if he is found with her.

Elaine gets dressed, and the two young people silently leave the workshop and sneak across the way to the house. Alex looks carefully around the corner to make sure Elaine gets into her window safely. Once assured of that, he climbs into his own window.

Once inside his room, he starts to breathe more easily. He undresses and is about to wash his face in the wash basin, when he hears approaching footsteps outside his door. Quickly jumping in bed and pulling the covers over himself, he closes his eyes and pretends to be asleep.

The door to his room opens without a knock. Alex hears Mrs. Murphy say, “There... I told you he was in here. You’re all worried for nothing.”

“Perhaps,” answered Mr. Murphy. “But he might not be alone.”

Alex felt a strong hand on his shoulder, shaking him. He opened his eyes and sat up, pretending to be disoriented from sleep.

“What—?” he looks around, blinking.

Mr. Murphy looks under his bed and in the closet while Mrs. Murphy steps to the bedside and places a hand on Alex’s forehead.

“Oh, my goodness! The boy is burning up!” she exclaims, touching Alex’s sweaty head. “Shame on us for waking him when he’s not feeling well!”

Mr. Murphy grudgingly apologizes for the intrusion and tells Alex he will see him in the morning. He leaves the room.

“What was that all about?” Alex asked.

“Don’t you concern yourself with it,” said Mrs. Murphy in a motherly voice. “Just go back to sleep and get your rest. I will check on you in the morning.”

She leaves the room, pulling the door shut behind her.

Alex takes a deep breath and tries not to imagine what would have happened if he had been caught with Elaine.
