/ Divide

Holding it in one hand you tap the division key followed by the equals sign. There is a barely audible hum and a series of cryptic numbers flash on the screen. Then the humming stops and when it does your left hand detaches itself painlessly from your wrist and falls to the floor with a thump. You are too shocked to even scream, instead, you just sit there staring dumbfounded at the smooth pink skin of the stump. It takes several seconds for your brain to catch up and register that there is no pain and no blood when there should be a great deal of both.

Carefully you touch the new skin the covers the end of your arm finding it a little more sensitive than you are used to but otherwise perfectly normal. Looking down you see your severed hand laying on the floor. It's only then that you realise you can the carpet against the back of your hand as if it was still attached. You think about wiggling your fingers and your digits wave back at you.

"Fuck!" you exclaim clenching your detached hand into a fist and then relaxing it "That's one hell of a trick."

On a whim, you flip the hand over and send it scuttling around the room like Thing in the Adam's Family. When you get bored with that you scoop it up and press it against your wrist causing it to join seamlessly with the end of your arm. However, you find you can pull it off again, popping it free as easily as if it was attached with Velcro. You can even reattach it the wrong way round with no apparent loss of function, even if it does look a bit strange.

Finally acting on a hunch you press the cancel key and the strange hum starts again. Abruptly your hand is back in its proper place and firmly attached once again.

Searching for an explanation you check the box but all you find is a business card with a stylised G stamped on it and the words Greyburg written in a flowing script. Even without knowing exactly where it came from you can't help grinning, thinking of all the fun you could have with the strange impossible device.
