Bomb in a celebration

The ball lazered down the line as I hit a winning shot against my training partner, Asher. "That was a damn good shot E."

"Thanks!" I blushed with pride. Ash was no slouch, so even after nationals that was still one of the best points I had played in a very long time.

"So ASL? Are you sure you wanna go down the path of the evil frat guy?" He started walking towards the net, indicating he was done playing for now.

"Yeah I'll always love tennis, but I think it's time I branch out my social life a bit. All I ever did in high school was study and play tennis." I tapped racquets with him as we started off the court.

"I know, but... be careful. I always hear such nasty rumors and you're really the only friend I got since moving here." Ash said with a goofy grin. My phone buzzed suddenly. Get to the house. 15 minutes.

A well of excitement drew up within me. "Gotta go! I'll tell you how it goes!"

We all crowded in the house, there must've been hundreds of us in there.

A man I hadn't met stepped onto one of many old looking, yet sturdy tables lining the event room we were in, "Attention everyone, congratulations on being selected during rush this year. I am sure however, that you are all wondering why there are so many of you, afterall there are only 200 brothers in this house, how can all 200 of you be new members?"

Murmuring arose from the rest of the group. "The answer is," Alex stepped up with the other brother, "that many of you will drop or be dropped from this house." The fearful whispers increased in volume, filling up the vast cavernous space of the room.

"One of the ways we cull you, so to speak, is with this." Alex held up a tiny pink pill so small I had to squint to even make it out in his large, veiny hand. "This, as some of you may know, is an x-change pill. And we brothers of the house have taken the liberty to undergo a long and tiresome process of ranking you newbies, the bottom half of which will have to take this pill or get the hell out of our house."

The house erupted in noise as each guy on the floor voiced their fears as if it would somehow exempt them from the selection. My own face grew pale as I realized what the implications of taking such a pill would mean.

Alex raised a hand, "Now I know what y'all are thinking. No we will not **** you to do anything while you are girls." A huge sigh of relief deflated the manic energy in the room. "However, you will be reranked weekly, so you have plenty of opportunity to join the main pledge class."

Not a whisper was uttered as every red blooded man in the room took a minute to calculate the risks and rewards of going through such a process. My own mind was racing, sweat began forming all over myself in pinpricks, but before I made up my mind: "We will now text you your ranking."

A new cacaphony of sound bloomed from every phone in the psuedo-auditorium. Hands shaking, I barely brought myself to look at my screen when I saw: Emile Nguyen, rank: 73 - Bottom.

My heart dropped.
