Ask why there is only one setting.

You look at Anna, then at Eve, "Why is there only one place set at the table?" You ask.

Both girls look a little confused, then a look of surprise crosses Anna's face. Pivoting towards Eve, "Quickly now, we have guests coming!"

Turning back towards you, you haven't even started to react yet when she continues, "Forgive me John, I should have anticipated that you might bring guests. The blame is mine," She casts her eyes downward, slouching slightly.

"What?" You're still trying to make sense of what is happening, "I've brought no one with me, I meant for the two of you."

Anna looks up, confusion in her eyes. Eve pauses uncertainly at the door to the kitchens, looking at you and her sister as if waiting for further instruction.

"When do the two of you eat?"

"Our job is to serve you. We may eat once the meal is complete," Anna says, her tone suggesting that she thinks this may be some form of trap, or at least a misunderstanding.

"So, you eat my leftovers," You see both girls glance at the table with mild surprise.

"No, we eat the servant's food, the leftovers are thrown away," She states.

You think for several seconds, slowly coming to a realization, "You have to serve me, then you eat something else because you aren't allowed to eat my leftovers?"
