Inheritance

You still feel a little numb after your long meeting with the lawyer late yesterday afternoon.

This has to be some kind of twisted joke. Why would Uncle Dave leave his entire estate to me? I never even remember meeting him, and everyone in the family always told me what a horrible person he was, even if they wouldn't give me details.

"Forget about him, he's a pervert and a narcissist. We're all better off without him around," I remember my dad saying to me one day when I asked about my Uncle. For that matter, I think that's the most I ever heard someone talk about him.

Shifting your attention back to the road, you turn off the main highway onto an old paved road. While the road seems good, its obvious from the number of branches and leaves on the road that its not been maintained in quite some time.

Maybe a quarter of a mile down the road, you come to an imposing gate and pull my car to a stop.

Your GPS tells you that you have arrived at my destination.

For several long seconds, you look at the gate, following its ornate pattern with your eyes. To either side of the gate is a tall brick wall with wicked looking metal spikes at the top.

I pity anyone trying to climb over that wall.

Getting out of the car, you produce the old looking key the lawyer handed you once you had signed what seemed like an endless pile papers. Still attached to it is a much newer key ring with a metal tag. The metal tag has the same number as the plack on the gate.

Glancing through the gate, you see a wooded drive leading up a hill. At its top, you can just make out a building. Bet that's the mansion.

Using the key, you unlock the gate, pushing it open with an effort.

Once open, you return to the car, drive it through, then get back out to close and lock the gate behind you again.
