Chapter 4 by TeratonArm TeratonArm

Who is at the door?

A nervous looking concierge

"Just a minute!"

Opening the door, you find a mousy looking woman, obviously somewhat uncomfortable, with brown hair pulled back into a ponytail, aside from a strand or two she had to push away from her glasses. Dressed in an impeccable example of the hotel employee's uniform, she extends a hand for you to shake.

"Hello, Mr. Doe, I hope everything in your room has been to your liking."

"Uh, yeah, it's been just fine. Thank you, Ms....?"

"Porter. Angela Porter, Angela is fine though. I have come to, ah," Angela coughs somewhat curtly, causing you to become a bit wary; this didn't seem like good news. "I've come to clear up some... 'confusion' surrounding your lodging for the duration of your stay."

"Is there something wrong with my room?" You ask. You were sure that you booked everything fine, and that you could afford it; you were about to either be really annoyed at yourself for doing something wrong, or very angry at the hotel for screwing you over somehow.

''No no no, the room is fine," Angela starts, waving worriedly, "it appears though that we here at the hotel have, quite embarrassingly, overbooked ourselves this vacation season. Specifically, this room. Your room." Angela pushed up her glasses. "Normally when this sort of thing happens-- rarely, I assure you-- we're able to find another room for one of the conflicting parties. But for the next week or so, we simply don't have, um, any. Now!" she starts, cutting you off, seeing your brow furrow and your mouth start to open to protest, "while I understand this is hardly fair we here at Appalachian Inns are prepared to offer you a choice of compensation, hopefully to accommodate everyone involved."

"....you're going to pay me if I give up the room?"

"That is one option. A full refund, as well as a complementary room upgrade on your next stay at one of our hotels. The other option is, um, somewhat more unorthodox. We would never normally consider this, except the other tenant involved is quite... persistent, in being able to stay in this room. Whether or not you are here as well."

"Wait, you mean sharing a room?"

"Yes," Angela nods, "with a discount towards both of your stay, as well as access to several other amenities we can provide you. I don't mean to rush you, I understand this is a lot to take in, but... again, the other tenant is very persistent. It would be best if you could answer quickly."

Huh. This wasn't great; sharing your space on this vacation had so far only gotten you an uncomfortable plane ride. But... discounts were nice. Very nice, actually, along with whatever other 'amenities' Angela had mentioned. And the idea of coming to Hawaii for a brief taste, only to leave before seeing anything other than your hotel room was almost too much to bear.

"Alright, I guess I'll share the room," you say, and Angela noticeably relaxes before you, some (certainly not all) of the tension in her frame dissipating.

"Excellent! I'll go get her now, then!" And like that, Angela has darted away back towards the elevators, leaving you to ponder her words.

'Her?'

Who is your new roommate for this trip?
