Navigating the Gym/Dungeon

Bell Survives the Pokémon Gym/Dungeon

I'm sure a LOT of people are going to find this boring. Those who don't want to read my brainstorming thoughts can skip ahead to after the line break.

Ok, so I'm going to be trying something NEW here. Or new for me anyway. I'll be using material I recently found on https://oracle-rpg.com/

Specifically I'll be using their ideas for Dungeon Generation

I don't need to roll for a Dungeon Theme or anything because I already have one. It's a Pokémon Bug Gym set up like an Hedge Maze.

After that I'll need to set up the "Dungeon/Wilderness Worksheet"

Instead of rambling on and on, I'll just fill out the sheet and show THAT!

Next step is to explore the maze room by room with rolling encounters per room using this table. A key aspect to understand is that after every "room" I fill out the "Progress Bar". Since this is an "Uncommon" Dungeon every cleared room is worth +3 Points. Every 4 Points will give me a +1 for my "Resolution Roll" to finish the dungeon.

this table will "map" the rooms

This table is for the "Resolution Roll", I'm not playing D&D so on the off change I need to use "Inspiration", I'll think of something... Later.

Edit: Thanks to Bigbop's suggestion, Inspiration will be a Free Mastery Token

and this table will roll for room contents

With that, lets do a bunch of rolls and pull some cards.

This is the end of my brainstorming.

As Bell steps into the hedge maze with Chester by her side, the first thing she noticed (3 Spade) was that there were three paths she could take, left, right, or straight ahead. (91; Trap w/ Treasure: Does she notice the trap? Bell Research d6 aided by Chester; 5, 4; success) The next thing she noticed was a berry bush planted in the dead center of the room. Bell takes a few steps towards the bush and sees some kind of thread on the ground. Considering that this is a Bug Gym she guesses that it is a silk thread, laying on the ground like a tripwire. Bell looks at Chester with a concerned look on her face. "The bastards are setting traps..." Still, if they are all this easy to spot, she shouldn't have too much trouble. Carefully stepping over the silk trip wire, Bell approaches the berry bush and picks a berry. (d10 roll: 1, Oran Berry) It's a common Oran Berry. Still, it would be useful.

"Ok, now which way to go?" Left, right, or straight ahead? (1d6; 6; going right) A few seconds later Bell randomly decides to go right. "Might as well..."

As Bell steps into the next room she sees a short path that splits to the left and the right. But dead center in the room is a Metapod. (2 Hearts, 56: Monster, 35: Metapod) "Well, that might explain the silk. Kick its ass Chester!" (Init: Bell d6 v Wild Metapod d6; 1 v 1; reroll 5 v 7: Metapod goes first) As Chester charges forward at the Metapod (uses Harden d6; 4; +1 defense) it immediately uses Harden. Which honestly does little, "Use Rollout!" (Rollout+2+1[Hard Stone]; 4, 14; Not going to waste mastery for the crit) as her starter rolls directly into the bug, sending it flying like a bowling pin. The Metapod tries to Bite Chester, (Bug Bite+2; 4 but since Chester has a Toughness of 5, no effect!) but Chester shrugs off the attack and as Bell commands him once more, "Finish it off with Rollout!" (Rollout+2+1+1; 13, 5; Metapod is defeated; +1 Pokémon XP) the bug goes flying over the wall and out of sight.

"Well, that was easy. Lets take a look around." A quick look shows that the right passage is a dead end. "Guess that means we're going left."

(4 Hearts, 90: Trap with Treasure; Bell Research d6 aided to Spot Trap; 5, 3 Yes) The next room is a strange zig-zag shape, with one exit immediately to her left while two more are at the other end. But that isn't what immediately catches her focus. No, what Bell is focused on are the ripe berries growing out of the walls. As well as the silk trip wires. "More silk strands and more traps..." Still, she manages to avoid them and grab herself another berry. (1d10; 10 Lum Berry) "A Lum Berry though, nice." But as Bell looks around there are three ways to go, back left, straight-ish, or right. "Might as well go straight...." It made sense for her to go deeper into the maze instead of backwards.

The next room she steps into is a mostly straight passage way, with a Vivillon hovering directly in front of her. (3 Diamonds, 59: Monster with Treasure, 70: Wild Vivillon)

"You got this Chester!" (Init: Bell d6 v Vivillon d6; 3, 1) "Use Rollout!" (Chester uses Rollout+4+1; 7, 7; 1/2 wounds) This isn't the first flying Bug Chester has fought and by now he knows exactly what to do. With a rolling leap Bell's starter gets a running start before jumping into a roll and then bouncing right into the flying bug. Making a loud buzzing sound the Vivillon sends a blast of, something at Chester. (Vivillon uses Struggle Bug+2; 8; 3/4 wounds) While the attack hits, it does little to slow Chester down. "You got this! finish it with Rollout!" (Chester uses Rollout+4+1+1; 13, 11; Vivillon faints; +1 Pokemon XP). At the bug gets hit by Chester once again, it takes the opportunity to fly away in fright.

Running over to Chester, Bell wraps her arms around him while checking him over. "Ah, looks like you got banged up there buddy. Lets get you fixed up." (Bell uses a regular Potion, 5 left) Using one of her Potions, Bell easily Bandages up Chester. "There you go, good as new. Now, lets see what that bug was guarding...."

(Rolling Pickup for Treasure [I'm REALLY glad I made this table now :D]; 7 berry; 7 Rawst) A quick look around reveals to Bell that the hedge walls in this room also have some ripe berries on them. Taking a berry she takes one last look around the room before heading towards the other side. "Looks like the only direction to go is forward, or to turn around." Now wanting to turn around, Bell and Chester press on.

(7 Hearts; 97 Special Encounter; Table 14 on page 16; Ace Spades Corrupted by Magic?)

As Bell and Chester step into the next room there doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. Which immediately puts her on guard because so far there has ALWAYS been something! "Keep your eye's open Chester, there might be a trap." Just because she was able to spot the first two easily doesn't mean she didn't miss a trap in this room. Or maybe there was something, or someone lying in wait to ambush her here! (Bell Heart d8, aided by Chester; 4, 5; she resists the "magic" in the room) The two of them carefully look around the small clearing long enough that Bell actually starts to get bored. Which makes her feel tired. It is only when she hears Chester give a big yawn that she realizes how sleepy she is feeling.

How long have they been in here anyway? Surely a short little nap wouldn't hurt... Wait! Maybe that was the trap! Some kind of Sleep powder, or hypnosis!? Looking down at Chester, Bell notices that he has already started to lie down on the ground. "SHIT!" Grabbing the Pokémon she leaves the room, ignoring the voice in the back of her head telling her to go to sleep.

(9 Clubs; 95 Special Encounter; King Clubs - A Friendly Gathering; Seems like an appropriate time to try a Resolution Roll. With 5 rooms cleared I roll a 1d6+3 and I get a 7! Bell has beaten the "Dungeon" and gets, what ever I decide an "Inspiration Point" means in this context.)

Once she is clear of the room, Bell falls to her hands and knees, shaking her head to clear it of, what ever was going on over there. "Oh, you made it." Looking up Bell sees a blond woman with big green eyes sitting cross legged in front of her. "I was worried for a moment, the sleep room is a real doozy. Get it, because it makes you doze off."

Now that her head was less cloudy, Bell realized who she was talking to. "You're... Viola..."

Still grinning, The Gym Leader's responds. "The one and only! Now, do you need a minute or are you good?"

Bell takes a deep breath, "Yeah, I'm good..." and manages to stand up. It seems that what ever was effecting her in the previous room was gone. Mostly anyway...

"Good, just follow me. I'll have you out of here in a jiffy!" The woman then stands up and starts walking confidently through one of the exits.

Not wanting to be left behind, Bell only spares a moment to look at Chester to make sure he follows before chasing after the Gym Leader. She did NOT want to spend any more time in here than she had to!

I'll have to admit, that COULD have gone a LOT worse! Bell didn't even fight another Trainer! While I'm glad Bell made it through, a part of me is sad that Bell didn't fall into any perverseness. But no, Bell managed to NOT get tied up and bound in silk :D Or fall prey to the "cursed room".

Total Earnings: Pokémon XP +2, Oran Berry 1, Rawst Berry 1, and 1 "Inspiration Point". Still need to decide what THAT ends up meaning...

For anyone interested, this is The "Dungeon Map" Bell ended up exploring.
