The Book of Control

You are walking in the park. It is a very beautiful day. The sun is shining and the birds are chirping. Near the park there is a forest of sorts, and today you feel compelled, strangely, to go there. You don't really know why, and you try to fight the urge, but you walk anyway. Deeper and deeper you go. Darker and darker it gets. You become uneasy, almost scared. Why are you walking into this deep dark forest? Why can't you stop yourself? Then you see it.

Deep inside the forest is a clearing. It is a perfectly round clearing roughly 10 meters across. The ground inside is black, burnt to a crisp. In the very center you see a large, black, leather-bound book. Your efforts to stop yourself double but you only manage to slow your walk to a careful tread. You kneel down to the book. The ground is hot below your knee and the smell of of fire and cooked flesh overcomes you. You notice that, across the front of the book is the word "DON'T" hastily scrawled in some dark red, gooey liquid. You lift the book and your hands burn hot. The liquid slides off the book without leaving a single mark. You open the cover. The very first page reads:

User, if you are reading this then I, Brandon Harlow, have either died or found you as my successor. Regardless of the circumstances, not even ten books of this thickness would suffice to explain the intricacies of the magic contained within this novel. However, there is ample room to provide instructions on usage, as I designed it to require minimal effort for even novice sorcerers.

Step one is to decide what form of mind control you wish to use. This book currently has three settings. Before you give any command you must think the number one, two, or three.

Setting one means that the person will mindlessly do as they're told and forget everything that happened when they are awoken from their hypnosis. Afterwards they will likely experience confusion, and wonder what happened.

Setting two means that the person will actually think that they want to do what you are commanding them. They will see it as doing it of their own free will, and will do it with pleasure. This may or may not have a lasting effect on the mental state of a person, depending on the usage. For instance, if you order someone to shoot a man, they will do it and think that they wanted to, even years afterward, and might do it again given the opportunity. Obviously, this can be reversed by using the book again.

Setting three means that a person will do something, but they will know they are being to do it. They will feel like their body is moving on its own, and will be fully aware of everything they are to do, and they will feel absolutely everything. If you make somebody commit an atrocity, they will be horrified but powerless to do anything but watch as their body does whatever you command.

After you select a setting you must think of what you want to do and look the person in the eye that you wish to control. The only limit here is what they physically can and cannot do. You cannot order someone to defy gravity and fly into the air, for instance.

Lastly, you need to make sure your skin is touching the book. The book has the power here, not you. The amount of skin contact is not important. As long as you're touching the book, it will work. If two people touch the book at once, only the first one to touch it will have control.

This book is an indestructible abomination to mankind. If you expose its power people will try to hunt you down and kill you. Governments will come after you. You must act in secret. Even when you control the world you must not let your power be known. On the following pages you will find runes.
