The Birthday Present

I can't believe it. I have never heard of a birthday wish coming true before the candles are even on the cake. But it is going to happen tonight. Today at work Sara the secretary that everyone wants but nobody gets wished me a happy birthday. She asked me what I was going to do and I just laughed and said "Nothing."

"What is that laugh for?" she asked. "Why didn't you make any plans?"

"Being a social leper makes planning things a little pointless." I replied.

"Oh come now. You just need a little confidence. I mean you are rather attractive and a perfect gen..." she paused and looked into my eyes and smiled. "How about you give me your address. I'll be over around seven and we'll make this a birthday to remember." The warmth in her eyes was hypnotic.

I gave her my address and walked to my office in a daze before I fully comprehended what happened. An hour later I saw her in the hall. I asked her why she was doing this and she told me that she liked me and that I was the only guy not constantly hitting on her. The rest of the day dragged on and on. I never thought it would never end.

Finally I got home and did a frenzied cleaning of my apartment. I showered three times until I realized I was using up all the towels. At last seven o'clock came and went. I sat on the sofa with my heart on the floor. I was feeling so pathetic I should have known she was giving me the runaround. At a quarter past seven the doorbell rang. I opened it and she was standing there with two other women.

"Sorry we're late. The traffic was horrible. This is Karri and Joy. They wanted to join in on the fun. So do you want to stay in or go out?"
