Chapter 1 by daciasdesire daciasdesire

"Have the cargo unloaded and left on the docks. I'll arrange for Tristan and his men to come and collect it," William Kent, Captain of the pirate ship Catherine's Fancy, told his first mate Jack Stirling.
"Aye Capn. I'll see it done mesself," Jack responded, acknowledging his Captain's wishes.

Bloody Will, Black Bill or any of the other names that William Kent had come to be known as during his career as a notorious sea dog, left the unloading of his ship to his first mate and strode away from the docks of Still Water. He would see the merchant Tristan later but first he had an urgent audience with the governor of Still Water. Nine days ago he had been hailed by a merchant vessel, while lying in wait along a trade route that William had been tipped off about. After allowing the ship to sail up along side The Catherine's Fancy, the first mate of the merchant ship had swung across baring a sealed envelope for the Captain. The message had been necessarily vague but William was able to decipher that Governor Restan had news of the utmost importance that required him to return to Still Water as soon as the winds allowed.

Just as the docks gave way to the housing district of Still Water, Captain Kent was able to hail a passing carriage and wrangle a ride up to Governor Restan's mansion for a small number of silver coins that William kept in the pocket of his exquisitely tailored coat. A ship's captain of his standing and notoriety didn’t need to carry anything more than a handful of small coins with himself at any one time. Just enough to pay for a meal, a mug of ale or two or whatever small trinkets happen to take his fancy at the market they were passing through at the time. If he had cause to purchase anything expensive William would instruct them to seek payment from Tristan The Merchant who he had arranged to handle his accounts in exchange for all his best cargo while in port.

It was a short but bumpy ride up to the governor's residence. The mansion itself was
nestled in amongst the wooded hills that surrounded the harbour. It was built far enough back and high enough up, that it was considered out of the cannon range of any ship brazen enough to attempt a raid on Still Water. William alighted from the coach in front of the gates to the house and walked boldly and purposely to the front door. His loud rap at the door was answered in due course by an immaculately dressed servant.
"Captain Kent. Please, do come in. Governor Restan has been expecting you. He is most eager to see you. You can find him in his study at present. I'm quite sure you know the way by now. Shall I have some refreshments brought in for you?" the servant addressed William as he ushered him in through the door.
"That would be greatly appreciated," Kent replied as he set off to find the Governor.

The large wooden door to the study was shut when William came to it. He knocked once politely before entering. The troubled face of the governor was broken momentarily with a look of relief before it was once again clouded.
"Governor," William said as way of a greeting, noticing the dark disposition of the man he had known for countless years.
"Captain, please take a seat," Restan responded.
William took the proffered seat opposite and waited for the governor to continue. Just as he felt the silence was becoming tangible Restan spoke up gravely. "I have received some distressing news..." Governor Restan began...
