Help! I'm reincarnated in another world and can't stop gaining skills!

'Having it all' is sometimes too much

Chapter 1 by MeedrowH MeedrowH

[A/N: Hello! This is a new project (my own idea this time) that I will be slowly working on whilst going on with my other stories. I want to highly encourage other creators to create something here! Anyway, have a good one!]

I'm not sure what hit me first. Was it the blinding light of the stadium lamp that broke and fell onto me? Or the crushing weight of the metal that slammed my body into ground, turning me into a pancake? Or was it the jolt of electricity from the lamps? Or their heat? Oh, well, not that it mattered much. I died, thankfully for me, instantaneously.

Tooru Otosaka is my name. I was never too lucky when it came to life. My grades in school were mediocore at best, athletic skills were not too great, either. My love life ended on a couple crushes and not even a real kiss, and my family life was always... parentless, in a way. My mother was going abroad a lot, almost never in home to be present, and while father was home sometimes... well... let's just say he wasn't too fond of me, either. But, perhaps that was what shaped me. Maybe I wasn't the smartest, or the strongest, but... I was always able to adapt easily. I used what knowledge I had to the best of my capabilities, and somehow got through each and every day with just a pack of money. 20000 yen was all I ever needed for food in a month (and I even made fancy dishes sometimes), and thanks to getting about 5000 extra as pocket money, I always had clothes to walk in.

Not that it matters much. I died. Pretty hilariously, too. I decided to finally do something with my life, and went to my school'd stadium to train after the work hours. Having spoken about details with my P.E. teacher, I was allowed in there without much issue so long somebody he appointed was with me. And well... that lamp was showing no sings of breaking, at all. But well, what happened happened, what's the point in obsessing over that?

In all honesty, I'm not sure how long I sat around in complete darkness, awaiting my fate. For some reason, I... wasn't even nervous. Devoid of all feelings, actually. Was this what it was to be dead? I could live with that.

But then, I heard a voice. A beautiful, tranquilizing voice that took over the darkness and shook it to the very core.

"Welcome, Tooru." It was feminine, but also... weirdly familiar. Did I know it from somewhere?

"Who are you?"

"A goddess? Maybe. A god? Maybe. To be honest, that's pretty pointless to ask." The voice sounded again. "What's important is what is going to happen to you."

"And what's that?"

"You have lived a good, albeit unsatisfying life. You were granted a chance to change that." The voice said. "You will appear in a new world, one where you will be able to become different from your current self."

"What do you mean by that? What does 'different' mean?"

"It's a world filled with magic, with creatures you've only heard about in legends and myths. A world teeming with life and prosperity. And you can live in there."

"Where's the hook, though?" I asked, unsure of how I should respond.

"There is none. You're given a chance, and you can either accept or reject it."

"..."

"Should I give you a tour of that world?"

"...no. I accept, but... I have a few questions."

"Of course. It's natural. Whatever you wish to know, I shall answer."

"Firstly, how am I gonna appear in there? Am I going to just pop out of existence in there? Or be born anew? Or just fit in somehow?"

"Mostly the last one, but if you wish, I can make it different."

"No, I think the last one is fine by me."

"What are your other questions?"

"You say there's magic in there? Will I be able to learn it?"

"The answer is a little more complicated. That world uses what you know as 'skills'. Those skills can be learnt at any time, but there are some limitations. Not everyone can learn everything. Moreover, basing on your life on Earth, you will be given a skill to start your journey. So, the short answer would be 'it depends on if you really want to'."

"Okay, I get it. What about the objective? Is there some kind of a Demon King or something that I need to take down?"

"Not exactly. In the world you'll descend into, humans, demons, and all other races have long since signed peace. You are not sent there to work, but to live a fulfilling life."

"...alright then. And what about language? Will I have to learn it?"

"You'll already know it when you reach that place."

"What about my body?"

"You will retain your physique and learning abilities. But, if you wish, I can create you a new one. Better, worse, female, male, animalistic, if you're into those. There is little limitation for me here."

"...I see." I nodded. Or rather, tried to nod. Only now did I realize that I had no body. Not anymore. It seemed I really changed into a spirit of sorts.

"Then, Tooru Otosaka, what is your decision? Leave as you lived or change yourself?"

Preserve identity? Or create a new one?
