Entry into Servitude

Principalia is a small state in the Mediterranean, so small, in fact, that most people would be unable to find it on a map. Furthermore, it had no real significance on the world stage, and spent much of its history in obscurity. At least until massive oil reserves were found within its borders.

The country experienced a massive boom in wealth, allowing it to build up infrastructure rapidly. As it did so, and as it became the home of rich oil executives and their families, as well as a safe haven for their tax dollars, Principalia began to become a state of the wealthy, much like Monaco.

As the country began to develop itself to attract wealthy executives to their shores, governments in the country chose to legislate in creative ways. This included some obvious laws preventing excessive taxation, but also included laws around the treatment of women. Various laws were drafted which limited their rights. However, these laws were quickly revised as they had a negative impact on investment and tourism to Principalia. Instead of women's rights being repressed, women could voluntarily give over their rights to a person of their choice for a definite or indefinite amount of time. As long as these conditions were met, and the contract was truly voluntary, the details of this servitude were left to be negotiated between the parties and once signed or agreed to verbally, would be legally binding.

When the law was written, there were no negative reactions on the international stage because no one could forsee a reason any rational woman would willingly revoke their rights.

But as these things often do, various individuals throughout the country found ways to use these laws to their advantage, or perhaps disadvantage.
