A Lost Knight's Romance

I wake up in a well stocked barn, burning down around me. As smoke begins to fill the air, I rise to my feet and begin making my way to the door. I pass a stable and hear a horse cry out as it expires from a combination of the smoke in the air and the trauma of the burn on its flesh, the smell tainting the air I run into the barn door. I throw my body at the door with all of my might, hoping to the seemingly locked door to give way to fresh air, but it yields not even an inch.

I lay down on my stomach in an effort to escape from the smoke, but the fire is too intense. Every breath I take is more labored than the last. I suppose that it was luck that let me pass out before the flames overtook my body, but there was no final thought to rush through my head, simply a feeling of emptiness in my chest. I had always heard that your life is supposed to flash before your eyes just before you die, but I saw nothing, just darkness. As my subconscious mind has finally accepted that this was the way that I was going to die, my eyes opened once more.

A gasp fills my lungs with air, as I shoot up to a sitting position from my bedroll. Recalling where I last laid down my head, I see a forest and a crude fire pit. "Hey boss. Another nightmare, huh? When are you going to tell me about them?" chirped my companion Grey.

"I will tell you whatever I want, whenever I damn well please Grey. Never forget that compared to me, you are nothing more than an insect." I snarled at the only person in my life that I could call a friend. I turned my head to take in Grey's visage.
