What's next?
the morning after
Sunlight filtered through the hotel curtains, painting golden stripes across tangled white sheets. Paul woke slowly, awareness returning in fragments. The weight of long hair spilling across the pillow. The softness of breasts pressing against the mattress. The pleasant ache between his legs that spoke of the night before.
He kept his eyes closed, clinging to the liminal space between sleep and waking where none of this had to be real yet.
Gerry's arm was draped across his waist, heavy and warm. His breath stirred the hair at the nape of Paul's neck. They were pressed together like puzzle pieces, and some traitorous part of Paul's borrowed body responded to the proximity with a flutter of heat low in his belly.
Paul opened his eyes.
The room looked different in daylight. Less romantic. More stark. Evidence of the night scattered around them—the wedding dress puddled on the floor, Gerry's tux jacket draped over a chair, champagne glasses on the nightstand.
Proof that it had happened. All of it.
Paul shifted carefully, trying not to wake Gerry. His body protested—muscles sore in unfamiliar places, skin hypersensitive where Gerry had touched him. He slipped out of bed and stood on unsteady legs, suddenly aware of his nakedness in a way that felt different from any morning after he'd experienced before.
This body was beautiful. He'd always known that intellectually—Jackie was objectively gorgeous. But inhabiting it, seeing it from the inside, feeling the way it moved and responded—that was something else entirely.
Paul caught his reflection in the mirror across the room and froze.
Jackie stared back at him. Sleep-tousled blonde hair. Flushed cheeks. Lips slightly swollen from kissing. The body marked with evidence of Gerry's attention—faint bruises on the throat, redness along the collarbone.
Paul's hands moved to his hips, tracing the feminine curve. His gaze traveled lower, taking inventory of this form he'd been given. Breasts that were smaller than he'd imagined they'd feel from the outside. A narrow waist. The soft swell of his belly. Thighs that pressed together when he stood with his feet close.
He turned slightly, looking at himself from different angles. The player in him, the part that had always appreciated the female form, saw it objectively—the aesthetic beauty, the careful grooming, the inherent sensuality.
But underneath that was something rawer. A growing awareness that this wasn't just a body he was wearing. It was becoming his body. The longer he stayed in it, the more natural it felt.
The more he wanted to explore it.
Paul's hand drifted lower, fingers ghosting over his stomach. The touch sent sparks through his nervous system—sharper, more concentrated than anything his male body had ever experienced. He'd discovered that last night, the way pleasure built differently here. Slower. Deeper. More consuming.
His fingers slipped between his thighs.
The sensation hit him like electricity. Paul gasped, bracing one hand against the dresser, the other hand moving with increasing purpose. This was different from the frantic, goal-oriented release he'd known before. This was layered, complex, pleasure radiating outward in waves rather than building to a single point.
His breath came faster. Soft sounds escaped his throat—breathy, feminine, utterly foreign. His eyes fluttered closed, losing himself in the sensation, in the way this body responded to his touch.
"Jesus Christ."
Paul's eyes snapped open. Gerry was awake, propped up on one elbow, staring at him with an expression somewhere between shock and something darker.
For a heartbeat, neither moved. Paul stood frozen, hand still between his thighs, caught in the act. He should feel embarrassed. Ashamed. Instead, heat flooded through him—not entirely from the interrupted pleasure.
"How long have you been awake?" Paul's voice came out husky, breathless.
"Long enough." Gerry's eyes tracked over Paul's naked form, hungry and conflicted. "What are you doing?"
"What does it look like?" Paul didn't move his hand. Some reckless part of him wanted to see how Gerry would react. "Getting to know the equipment."
"That's—" Gerry's jaw worked. "That's Jackie's body."
"It's my body now." Paul's fingers moved slightly, deliberately. He watched Gerry's pupils dilate. "Might as well learn how it works."
"Paul—"
"Don't." Paul's voice sharpened. "Don't call me that right now. Not when you're looking at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you want to touch me." Paul stepped away from the dresser, moving closer to the bed. Each step was measured, deliberate, hips swaying in a way that felt instinctive in this body. "Like last night wasn't enough."
Gerry sat up fully, sheets pooling around his waist. "Last night was—"
"Incredible," Paul finished. "Mind-blowing. The best sex of your life, probably."
"That's not—" But Gerry couldn't finish the denial. His hands clenched in the sheets.
"It's okay." Paul sat on the edge of the bed, close enough that their legs touched. "I know it was good for you. Because it was good for me too. Better than good. This body—" He gestured to himself. "—it feels everything so intensely. Every touch. Every kiss. I've never experienced anything like it."
"You're talking about sex with me. Your best friend."
"No." Paul reached out, cupping Gerry's face. "I'm talking about sex with my husband. Because that's what you are now, legally. You married me yesterday. You consummated that marriage last night. And we're about to spend two weeks in Hawaii pretending everything is normal."
Gerry's expression cracked. "Nothing about this is normal."
"I know." Paul leaned in, lips brushing against Gerry's. "But we're doing it anyway."
The kiss was slower than the ones from last night. Less frantic. Gerry's hands came up to Paul's waist, pulling him closer until Paul was straddling his lap, the sheets the only barrier between them.
"We should talk about this," Gerry murmured against Paul's mouth. "About what happens now."
"Later." Paul's hands threaded through Gerry's hair. "Right now I just want—"
"What?" Gerry pulled back just enough to meet his eyes. "What do you want?"
Paul hesitated. The answer should have been simple—he wanted to reverse the swap, get his body back, return to his life. But sitting here in Gerry's lap, feeling the heat of his skin, the way his body responded to Gerry's proximity—the truth was more complicated.
"I want to not think," Paul said finally. "I want to feel. Just for a little while longer."
Gerry searched his face, looking for something. Then he pulled Paul down into another kiss, and thinking became impossible.
