What's next?
the wedding night
The door clicked shut behind them, sealing them into plush silence. The suite was extravagant—floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, king bed draped in white linens, champagne chilling in a silver bucket. Everything orchestrated for a wedding night that was supposed to belong to Gerry and Jackie.
Paul stumbled slightly, catching himself on the wall. The champagne from the reception hummed pleasantly through his veins, softening edges that had been razor-sharp all day. He reached down and yanked off the heels with a groan of relief, dropping them carelessly on the carpet.
"Jesus fucking Christ," Paul muttered, flexing his toes. "How does she wear those torture devices?"
Gerry closed the door and leaned against it, watching. His bow tie hung loose, top button undone. His expression was unreadable—exhausted, conflicted, something darker simmering beneath.
Paul limped toward the bed and collapsed onto it face-first, sprawling across the pristine white comforter. The dress bunched around him, layers of tulle and silk spreading like petals. "My feet are killing me," he groaned into the duvet. "Everything is killing me. This body wasn't built for heels and Spanx."
For a long moment, Gerry didn't move. Then Paul heard footsteps. Felt the mattress dip. Strong hands lifted his feet—Jackie's feet—into Gerry's lap.
Paul lifted his head, surprise flickering across his face. "What are you—"
"Shut up," Gerry said quietly. His thumbs pressed into the arch of Paul's foot, finding the knots of tension and working them loose with practiced precision.
Paul's breath hitched. The sensation was intense—sharper, more concentrated than anything he'd felt in his own body. Every nerve ending seemed dialed to maximum sensitivity. Gerry's hands moved methodically, kneading the ball of his foot, stroking along the delicate bones.
"Fuck," Paul breathed, eyes fluttering closed. "That's—that's good."
Gerry's hands moved to his other foot, repeating the process. Firm pressure. Slow circles. The kind of care that spoke to years of habit, of intimate knowledge. This was something Gerry had done for Jackie countless times before.
Paul relaxed into it, tension draining from muscles he hadn't realized were clenched. The champagne buzz mixed with the physical relief, creating a warm haze that settled over his thoughts. For the first time all day, he let himself just feel—no performance, no calculation, no agenda.
Gerry's hands slid higher, fingers wrapping around Paul's ankle, then his calf. Still gentle. Still methodical. Working out the strain of standing in heels for hours.
"You did good today," Gerry said softly. "Better than I expected."
Paul cracked one eye open. "That a compliment?"
"It's an observation." Gerry's hands continued their path upward, reaching the sensitive hollow behind Paul's knee. "You played the part. Convincingly."
"I'm a quick study. You know that."
"I do." Gerry's voice dropped lower. His hands stilled for a moment, resting just above Paul's knee. "That's what worries me."
Paul pushed himself up on his elbows, turning to look at Gerry properly. "Why does it worry you?"
"Because you're not struggling. You're not fighting it. You're—" Gerry's jaw worked. "You're enjoying it."
"So what if I am?" Paul's voice came out breathier than intended, Jackie's vocal cords shaping the words into something softer, more vulnerable. "Would you rather I spent the whole day panicking? Ruining your wedding?"
"It's not my wedding if you're the one standing next to me."
"Then whose is it?" Paul sat up fully now, dress rustling around him. "Jackie's not here, Gerry. She's trapped in my body watching her life happen without her. And yeah, that's tragic. But I'm the one who had to walk down that aisle. I'm the one who kissed you at the altar. I'm the one wearing this dress."
His hands gestured to the elaborate gown, then dropped to his lap. "So yeah, I'm making the best of it. What else am I supposed to do?"
Gerry's eyes tracked over Paul's face—Jackie's face—searching for something. "I don't know if I'm talking to Paul or if you're already becoming someone else."
The words hit harder than Paul expected. He looked down at his hands—small, delicate, nails painted bridal white. Not his hands. Never his hands.
"Maybe I'm both," Paul said quietly. "Maybe that's what happens when you put someone's mind in someone else's body. Lines blur."
Gerry's hand reached out, cupping Paul's jaw. His thumb brushed across Paul's cheekbone—Jackie's cheekbone—in a gesture so tender it made Paul's chest ache.
"I loved her," Gerry whispered. "I love her. Whatever body she's in."
"I know." Paul leaned into the touch despite himself. "But she's not here right now. I am."
"Are you Paul? Or are you pretending to be Jackie?"
"Does it matter?"
Gerry's eyes darkened. His hand slid from Paul's jaw down the column of his throat, fingers trailing along the neckline of the dress. "It should matter."
"But it doesn't," Paul breathed. "Not to your body. Not when you touch me like this."
Gerry's hand stilled, resting against the swell of Paul's collarbone. "We shouldn't—"
"Probably not." Paul's voice dropped to barely a whisper. "But we're going to anyway, aren't we?"
The air between them went electric. Gerry's eyes searched Paul's face one last time—looking for permission, for absolution, for some sign that this wasn't the worst mistake of his life.
Paul answered by leaning forward and kissing him.
It was different from the public kisses. No audience. No performance. Just the two of them and the terrible, magnetic pull neither could resist.
Gerry responded immediately, his mouth opening against Paul's, tongue sliding past his lips. His hands moved to Paul's waist, gripping the corseted bodice and pulling him closer. Paul gasped into the kiss, overwhelmed by the sensation—not just the kiss itself, but the way his body responded. Heat pooling low in his belly. Skin hypersensitive everywhere Gerry touched. A liquid warmth spreading through his limbs that felt nothing like masculine arousal.
This was softer. Deeper. More consuming.
Gerry's hands found the zipper at the back of the dress and hesitated. "Tell me to stop."
"Don't stop," Paul whispered against his mouth.
The zipper slid down. Cool air kissed Paul's spine. Gerry's fingers traced the line of it, knuckles dragging against newly exposed skin. Paul shivered, arching into the touch.
"God," Gerry breathed. "You feel—"
"Different," Paul finished. "I know."
Gerry pulled back just enough to look at him, eyes blown dark with want and conflict. "I don't know if I can do this."
"Yes, you can." Paul's hands moved to Gerry's shirt, fingers working the buttons with surprising dexterity. "We both can. It's just bodies, Gerry. Just flesh."
"It's not just bodies." But Gerry didn't stop Paul from undoing his shirt, didn't pull away when Paul's hands—Jackie's hands—splayed across his bare chest.
"Then what is it?" Paul challenged.
Gerry's answer was to kiss him again, harder this time, swallowing whatever protest Paul might have made. His hands pushed the dress off Paul's shoulders, baring skin inch by inch. The bodice loosened. The dress pooled around Paul's waist.
Paul gasped, suddenly hyperaware of his exposed chest—small, soft, utterly foreign. Gerry's hands covered his breasts, thumbs brushing over sensitive peaks. Paul's head fell back, a moan escaping his throat that sounded nothing like any sound he'd made before.
"Fuck," Paul panted. "That's—"
"Too much?"
"No. Not enough." Paul grabbed Gerry's wrists, holding his hands in place. "Don't stop touching me."
Gerry's control snapped. He pushed Paul back onto the bed, following him down, covering Paul's smaller body with his own. The weight of him was grounding and overwhelming all at once. Paul's legs wrapped around Gerry's waist instinctively, the voluminous skirt bunching between them.
"This is insane," Gerry muttered against Paul's neck, lips and teeth marking sensitive skin.
"Yeah," Paul agreed breathlessly. "But you're not stopping."
"Neither are you."
Paul's laugh was shaky, edged with something close to hysteria. "I don't know how to stop. I don't know how to be in this body and not feel everything so fucking intensely."
Gerry lifted his head, eyes meeting Paul's. For a moment, clarity flickered there—recognition of the precipice they stood on, the point of no return.
Then Paul pulled him down into another kiss, and the moment shattered.
Gerry's hands roamed, learning the map of Jackie's body through Paul's reactions. Paul arched and gasped and clung to Gerry like a lifeline, drowning in sensation he had no framework to process. Every touch lit fires under his skin. Every kiss pulled him deeper into this borrowed flesh, into the reality that he wasn't Paul anymore—not entirely.
He was something else now. Someone else.
And the terrifying part was how much he wanted it.
Gerry stripped away the rest of the dress, leaving Paul in nothing but the white lace lingerie beneath. Paul should have felt vulnerable. Exposed. Instead, he felt powerful—desired in a way he'd never experienced before. Not for his charm or his confidence, but simply for existing in this body.
"Look at me," Gerry commanded softly.
Paul obeyed. Their eyes locked. In that moment, something shifted—an acknowledgment passing between them. This wasn't Gerry and Jackie. It wasn't even Gerry and Paul.
It was something new. Something neither could name.
Gerry's hand slid beneath the lace, and Paul stopped thinking altogether.

Later
The room was dark. City lights filtered through the sheer curtains, casting everything in shades of blue and silver. Paul lay curled against Gerry's side, the bedsheets tangled around them both. His body—Jackie's body—hummed with aftershocks of pleasure that still felt alien and addictive.
Gerry's fingers traced lazy patterns on Paul's bare shoulder. Neither spoke.
Paul's mind spun, trying to process what had just happened. The mechanics of it had been utterly foreign—sensation concentrated differently, pleasure building in waves rather than a singular peak, the overwhelming vulnerability of being opened and filled rather than penetrating.
His entire understanding of intimacy had been rewritten in the span of hours.
"Are you okay?" Gerry's voice broke the silence.
Paul almost laughed. "I have no idea. Are you?"
"No." Gerry's honesty was brutal. "I just slept with my best friend in my fiancée's body on my wedding night. Nothing about this is okay."
"But you don't regret it."
A long pause. "No. I don't. And that makes it worse."
Paul shifted, propping himself up on one elbow to look at Gerry properly. "What do we do now?"
"I don't know." Gerry's hand moved to cup Paul's face, thumb stroking across his cheekbone in that now-familiar gesture. "We're supposed to leave for the honeymoon tomorrow. Two weeks in Hawaii. Just us."
"Just us," Paul echoed. The implication settled heavy between them.
"I should be going with Jackie."
"But you're going with me."
"Are you Paul? Or are you Jackie now?"
Paul didn't have an answer. The lines had blurred so completely he wasn't sure where one ended and the other began. He'd spent the day inhabiting Jackie's life, wearing her body, performing her role. And now, lying in Gerry's arms, feeling the pleasant ache of intimacy in muscles he'd never owned before—he didn't know what he was anymore.
"Maybe I'm both," Paul said finally. "Or neither. Does it matter?"
Gerry's expression twisted. "It should."
"But it doesn't." Paul leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to Gerry's lips. "We both crossed that line tonight. We can't uncross it."
"No," Gerry agreed quietly. "We can't."
Paul settled back against Gerry's chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. Outside, the city hummed with life. Somewhere in the hotel, Jackie was probably lying awake in Paul's body, tormented by everything she'd lost.
Paul knew he should feel guilty. Should feel horrified at what they'd done.
Instead, all he felt was the lingering warmth of Gerry's touch and the terrifying realization that he wanted more.
