Preparing to Leave

Chapter 9

The alarm on Gerry's phone shattered the moment with brutal efficiency. Their flight to Hawaii left at noon—they had barely two hours to pack, check out, and get to the airport.

Paul reluctantly disentangled himself from Gerry's arms and padded naked to the bathroom. The shower was quick, functional, but even the spray of water against his skin felt different—more acute, each droplet a tiny sensation unto itself.

When he emerged, towel wrapped around his chest, Gerry was already dressed in jeans and a polo shirt, looking rumpled and conflicted. Their eyes met across the room. Neither spoke about what had just happened. What kept happening.

Paul moved to the suitcase Jackie had packed—he had packed, technically, though the memories felt borrowed, distant. He pulled out the carefully chosen travel outfit: a soft cream-colored sweater dress that clung in all the right places, paired with leather leggings and ankle boots with a modest heel.

The underwear came first. Delicate lace in pale pink—a matching set that Jackie had picked out specifically for the honeymoon. Paul slid the panties up his legs, adjusting them over his hips with surprising ease. The fabric sat against his skin like it belonged there, soft and barely-there. The bra followed, his hands moving with muscle memory that wasn't his own, hooking the clasp behind his back on the first try.

He caught Gerry watching him in the mirror's reflection. Their eyes met. Gerry looked away first.

Paul pulled on the sheer stockings next, rolling them up each leg slowly, deliberately. The silk whispered against his skin, hugging the curve of his calves and thighs. Everything fit perfectly. Everything felt right in a way that should have been disturbing but wasn't.

The dress slipped over his head, settling into place with barely any adjustment needed. Paul smoothed it down over his hips, checking the mirror. The woman looking back at him was flawless—put-together, elegant, ready for a romantic honeymoon getaway.

He sat at the vanity and opened Jackie's makeup bag. His hands moved without conscious thought, selecting products, uncapping tubes and compacts. Foundation applied with practiced sweeps. Concealer dabbed under his eyes. Powder set with a fluffy brush. Eyeliner traced along his lash line in a smooth, unwavering stroke.

Each movement came naturally, as if he'd done this a thousand times. Paul's mind should have struggled, fumbled, needed to think through each step. Instead, his hands simply knew. They moved with Jackie's precision, her practiced grace, creating the exact look she would have worn.

Mascara. Blush. A nude lip with just a hint of gloss.

When Paul looked up, the transformation was complete. Jackie stared back at him from the mirror—fresh-faced, glowing, beautiful.

"How did you—" Gerry's voice was rough. He stood in the doorway to the bathroom, staring at Paul with something close to awe and terror. "How do you know how to do that?"

Paul turned on the vanity stool, meeting Gerry's eyes. "I don't know. My hands just... did it." He looked down at his fingers—Jackie's fingers—as if seeing them for the first time. "It's like the body remembers even if I don't."

"That's not possible."

"Neither is body swapping, but here we are." Paul stood, slipping his feet into the ankle boots. They fit perfectly, the heel height comfortable despite Paul's lack of experience. He took a few steps, testing his balance, and found it solid. Natural.

Gerry watched him move, his expression unreadable. "You look exactly like her. Move like her. If I didn't know—"

"But you do know." Paul crossed the room, stopping in front of Gerry. "That's the problem, isn't it? You know I'm Paul. But everything else—" he gestured to himself, "—says I'm Jackie."

"I don't know what you are anymore."

The words hung heavy between them. Paul felt something twist in his chest—hurt, maybe, or fear. He wasn't sure which.

"Neither do I," Paul admitted quietly.

A knock at the door startled them both. "Housekeeping!"

"We need to go," Gerry said, breaking the moment. He grabbed his own suitcase, avoiding Paul's eyes. "Can't miss the flight."
