Chapter 4
by asvgerferf
Do you press them?
Why not?...
Writer's Note: I'm using Selzara's base story as a template, sort of like a spin-off, "what if Emma thought a bit more methodically and also a bit like me" but still in the same setting. I'll leave anything that logically wouldn't be affected by changes just as it is in the Selzara's story and try to follow Selzara's setting as close as i can but i haven't read it all. If anyone has a problem with any of that just DM or leave a comment, i'll change things. Also not everything has been explained yet in Selzara's chapters so i'll be making my own guessing on how things work. if Selzara reads this, please correct me on anything you see, like how the system interface or magic works in the world. I'd love to know more about the world building and stuff since going deep into that kinda thing is my jam.
You tentatively reach out and tap the inventory button on the interface. Suddenly, the screen transforms into something straight out of a retro RPG game – boxes for items, a currency display – the whole shebang. "Ok... Let's test this out." you say, eyeing the setup thoughtfully. you look around the cave, your gaze settling on the only light source, the torch. Gingerly, you scoop it up, mindful not to snuff out the flame, lest you be left in the dark in this unknown cave.
New Item: Lit Torch
A wooden stick with a piece of tar-soaked cloth wrapped around the end. Can be used to light up dark places.
A translucent box pops up in the corner of your vision. "Neat," you murmur, reaching out to poke it, only to watch your hand pass through. "Figures," you mutter, refocusing on the inventory screen. Carefully, you maneuver the torch toward it, but then hesitate. Who knows if the 'Lit Torch' stays lit in the inventory? Remembering your earlier self-monologue about the risks of losing your only light source, you opt for a safer experiment: assaulting a nearby pebble. Classy, right?, Picking up the largest one from a nearby pile, you wait. "No notification...?" You observe out loud, and as if on cue...
New Item: largest Pebble
A pebble that has surpassed its peers, you may even consider it a small rock. It dreams of one day becoming a boulder. Can be used as a paper weight
Your lips curl in mild amusement at the message, before bringing the torch slightly diagonal to the ground. You swing down with the large Pebble!
CRACK!
Your hand hurts."Ow..." On the bright side that 'crack' wasn't from the bones in your hands, but part of the torch's handle. Achieving your purpose, you pick up the splintered piece of wood and consider for a moment before moving it towards the inventory. As soon as it reaches, it passes right through, like with the item notifications. "Well, that didn't work." You try again, this time you whisper, "Enter inventory" Nothing happens. You try everything else you can imagine, along with anything you can remember from similar novels you've read in the past.
At one point, you reach towards the screen slowly, and let go of the splintered wood above one of the slots, expecting it to just fall through again, but to your surprise, the wood lights up for a split second, then disintegrates, appearing in one of your inventory slots. "Huh, so that's how it works...?" You take a moment to figure out how that's any different from just tossing or physically trying to put it in like you attempted before but give up. You also realize, you now have to figure out how to remove items, and if the previous ordeal was anything to go by, this might take a while...
After some thankfully, brief experimentation, you press on the wood's icon on the inventory window and it appears in your hands. Now a certified expert in inventory-ology, you bring the retrieved splintered piece of wood to the flame of the torch, letting it ignite before placing it back in the inventory. You wait for a while before retrieving the item noticing it's still lit and didn't seemed to have burned up yet. Now while are you weren't exactly the smartest person at Uni, you do know that fire needs oxygen to burn and the fact that the fire didn't go out and the wood didn't seem any different, implies the time inside the inventory is probably frozen, or something similar. Useful information!
With that aside you place the torch, along with the burning piece of wood into your inventory. Now in pitch darkness, you check, and indeed the interface is still visible! You press the arrow in the corner of the interface and you go back to the first two selections. "Now, let's check out the stats section, hopefully it'll be simpler than the inventory."
You press the button and the interface changes yet again:
Character Stats
Name : Emma
Class : Commoner
Level : 1
Experience : 0/100
Hp : 10/10
Mp : 5/5
Strength : 1
Endurance : 1
Agility : 1
Intelligence : 1
Unassigned points : 10
Special abilities :
Inspect Lv. 1
Gain information about someone or something.
Manipulate Lv. 1
Alter a insignificant opinion or memory of the target.
"All ones?" You're surprised considering the fitness of your current body, "Well, at least I'm consistent. This set-up really seem like something right out of a litRPG novel, or game though. My class is also commoner... brace for medieval feudal society cliches~ " You chuckle at your prediction, "I should still be careful though, cant be too safe." You continue going through your status window, "Only ten Hp is concerning... if even the weakest injuries deal one damage i'd be down in 10 hits... Mp implies magic is a thing, that can be useful, if I can figure that outs. 10 points to start out is good, considering that one point already makes me this fit. [Inspect] will be useful, and [Manipulate] seem like it'll also be handy, especially if I level it up." You've always wondered if putting points into Intelligence will actually make you smarter in these kinds of settings, or if strength actually affects muscle mass and that kind of stuff. You decide to not touch your points for now, saving for emergencies never hurt.
You take out the torch once more, before shutting down the interface, and as soon as you do, a new box appears before you.
NEW QUEST : Leave the cave
Find a way out of the cave
Reward : 20Exp
Writer's Note: It'll be pretty similar to Selzara's story for the first 2-3 chapters which cant be helped, since i branched off here, mainly because i didn't want Emma to use all her points in Intelligence, so I couldn't branch off later, but i'll be keep to the same setting like i said above so bear with me for a bit. The chapters will be different though, just that it'll be minor at the start, mainly behavioral differences, more cautious and meticulous.
You should probably listen to the quest. Right?
The Unknown Power
