What should he do to prepare for his quest?

Try to recruit some companions

Chapter 4 by FreakyFreak

Knowing all too well his abilities and accomplishments were extremely lacking, Robert headed to the guild hall. He couldn't do it himself, after all.

The hall was bustling with activity as per usual, adventurers collecting rewards, taking quest listings, chatting, the works. Robert headed straight for the clerk station, for once not just making an excuse to see the gorgeous woman that usually manned it.

No sooner had he stepped up to the counter that she pursed her lips with an unimpressed expression. "Robert." She greeted. "Hey, Hilda. Could you point out people without a party? I need to do some recruiting." He said. "What for? Just join someone's party like you always do." She shot back. He smiled, holding back his annoyance. "I'm heading out to face The Darkness. Today. I need companions." He said simply. Hilda rose a brow, and her eyes flitted over him.

Holy shit. Was it already working? Just expressing his desire to take up the legendary quest got him some attention?

"You don't really look the leader type, but all right." Alright, not quite yet.

Hilda sighed, looking over the people.

"Over yon, man with the blue hair. Heard he's a bit over-excitable, so his last party dropped him. Fighter, I believe."

"In the corner, in the cloak looking all suspicious. Dunno their deal, but they come here often and don't ever grab a quest, so maybe they're open."

"Pink haired elf there, she's a cleric."

"Half-orc devouring that turkey. Take a guess as to why no one wants her."

"Orange lass over there, you know how tieflings can be, all prickly and sensitive."

"That pale freak with the glasses, there. Gives everyone the creeps, and for good reason, too. Heard he ate a goblin head once."

"Dark skinned dwarf there, with the axe. She's a barbarian. Tough-headed, I think."

"Then there's that lanky bitch drow with the mace. Believe she's a warlock or such. Might stab you in the back, though."

"There's also that bigger orc. He's loud as shite and dumb as rocks. You probably couldn't stop him from doing something disastrous."

"And of course, you could always ask around yourself, fucker. Next!" Hilda shouted, done with helping him. Robert sighed but stepped aside anyway, eyes roving as he thought hard.
