Chapter 18 by hambo hambo

What's next?

The servant helps

"Well your majesty, I think the best thing to do would be for me to scour this room first, and if that doesn't work, we start trying elsewhere," said the servant. "You just sit there while I go through everything."

That made sense to Belinda. After all, it would be below her standing to be seen crawling around on the floor in an embarrassing attempt to find them. "Proceed," declared the queen.

Without her glasses, all Belinda could see was a few blobs moving around a larger, different colored blob.

That servant must have brought a couple others with her. That should speed things along.

The searching was rather quiet at first. It sounded like cabinets were being opened, drawers being sifted through.

"Any luck?" Asked the queen.

"Not yet your majesty. Let me try being a little more thorough..." the voice responded.

"Very well," said Belinda. "Just be sure to put everything back where you found it when you finish."

"Of course your majesty," replies the voice. "Hmm... since you're sitting anyway, would you mind if I took a look at your shoes?"

"My shoes? Why?" Belinda was utterly perplexed by the request.

"Well, your highness from where I'm standing, it looks like one of your heels is about to break, and in your current state, you could easily end up falling and getting hurt," the voice said.

That makes sense.

"Very well, it's rather unbecoming of me to go barefoot, but falling would be even more humiliating," Belinda said as the shoes were pulled from her feet. Soon the hands were slipping the royal rings off her toes and the gold chains from her ankles as well.

"What are you doing?" Asked the shocked queen.

"M-my apologies my queen, but without your footwear, wearing this would be dangerous. You could hurt your feet," said the voice, sounding nervous.

"Oh," says Belinda. "I didn't think of that, go ahead."

The voice let out a sigh and continued until the queen's feet and ankles were bare of all accessories.

Soon things started getting louder.

It sounds like furniture is being moved around, and it sounds like something metal is clanging?

"How about now?" Belinda asks again.

"Still nothing, your majesty... actually... do you think it could have gotten stuck in your throne's cushions?" Asked the voice.

"I suppose..." said Belinda. "Although I don't feel anything."

"Would you mind standing up so I can check?" The voice asked.

"Very well," said Belinda feeling mildly inconvenienced.

She stood up and took a couple of steps on her bare feet away from the throne.

She didn't remember there being any bare patches of floor in the room, but what she was standing on certainly felt like smooth stone.

I must speak to the carpenter about this. The whole room should be covered. I'm surprised I never noticed this before.

As she pondered the carpet situation, the servant's search grew even louder. Cutting noises, grinding noises, a hammer?

Just how more thorough can the servants be?

"Well?" Belinda was getting very annoyed now. "I want to sit."

"Still nothing, your highness," said the voice "but the throne has been cleared, let me help you sit back down."

The servant guided Belinda back to the throne. Although it felt colder and harder.

These cushions need to be re-fluffed.

After a few more minutes and several more loud tool-sounding noises. Everything got quiet again.

"I'm sorry your majesty, it looks like your glasses aren't here. Where should we try looking next?"

The queen stood up and had the 'servant' guide her out so they could continue the search.

The servant's accomplices leave shortly after, taking with them everything housed in the former throne room except a single folding chair, where Belinda's comfy throne had once sat, bolted to the floor.

Where does Belinda go?
