Chapter 12 by JohnLocke4 JohnLocke4

What next?

Reaching The Camp

Hours passed by as the well-beaten trail gave way, turning overgrown and almost covered with grass. Zack and Ashley had hardly noticed, the duo instead focusing only on each other, learning as much as they could about one another. "Seriously, you really were on the basketball team? I really can't remember seeing you there this year or even last year,"

"Well, you wouldn't have seen me, I only played my first few years of high school. In junior year I twisted my ankle, and that meant I couldn't try out. And after missing last year, I just said screw it and just didn't even try out this year," Zack explained,

"Even so, I hate the fact that all I really knew about you was you are Taylor's brother and Brandon's friend," Ashely said, her voice holding a touch of disappointment,

"Well, I only knew you were Brandon's girlfriend, and Hannah's sister," Zack quickly pointed out, trying to make her feel better,

"No, you know I'm a cheerleader, that I'm on the honor roll, and that I'm planning on going to Green Hills, if they'll take me," Ashley pointed out, "I don't know any of that about you,"

"I knew all that because Brandon used to talk," Zack shrugged, "And, if we're being honest, I don't think we had a chance to talk before this trip, at least not one on one,"

Ashley giggled softly, "I like one on one time with you," Zack let out a slightly nervous laugh of his own, "You're really sweet, I'm utterly shocked that you're alone...shit, wait," Ashley lowly said as she slowed to a halt, "You are alone, aren't you?"

"Me?" Zack asked back in surprise, "Yeah, of course. Oh! You must mean Lisa, no yeah, we broke up a while back now,"

"No not Lisa Rivera, Chloe you dummy," Ashley replied, "You two aren't an item?"

"Chloe? No, of course not, we're best friends and that's a relationship I wouldn't risk losing for anything. We never once tried anything, and I'd bet a lot that we never will," Zack confidently said making a smile return to Ashley's face,

"Oh, good," Ashley instantly said before clearing her throat and slightly blushing, "I mean, explaining that kiss wouldn't have been good if you two were together,"

"Yeah, the kiss," Zack repeated, rubbing the back of his neck a bit unsure, "Uh, do you think that maybe we -- whoa," He began to say only to abruptly stop as the forest suddenly gave way to a clearing. The pair slowly looked around and Zack spotted a few wooden cabins tucked away in some overgrowth, "Oh shit, check that out,"

"This must have been the actual camp before it shut down," Ashley said as they began to walk towards the abandoned buildings, "God, these things are at least fifty years old, probably more,"

"Yeah, it's weird to think Heather's dad stayed in these when he was a kid," Zack mused before flicking his eyes up towards the sky, "Overcast, we might be getting some rain,"

"Maybe," Ashley shrugged back, continuing towards the cabins,

"Shouldn't we head back?" Zack asked,

"Oh come on, don't want to explore a little? Who knows what cool things might be inside," Ashley said giving him an expectant look.

Stay Or Go?
