Chapter 10

Does Sarah jump everyone she sees?

She might yet end up fucking everyone, but so far… no

Sarah

"Are you okay, Sarah?" Tera asked. "You've been distracted the last couple of days."

It was true, she was distracted. And she hadn't been acting like herself. Tera had propositioned her, but she'd given her the stupid excuse that she was on her period, this would be the fifth day of that excuse. She really wanted to see Joslynn again, but apparently, the Director had been keeping the woman very busy. 'Or she's avoiding me,' Sarah thought gloomily. 'Not that we could do anything, considering…'

"I'm fine Tera, it's just… Do you think we're going to succeed?"

Tera looked over from her station, "Is this about the news this morning?"

"The first infected have been reported in New Zealand. It's already in Europe and Asia. We're having some success with identification, and some success in capturing them, but we haven't made any progress on curing them, or on a vaccine. With how incredibly adaptive this virus is I don't think we can vaccinate. I doubt we can cure it."

Tera frowned, "What do we do then?"

Sarah bit her lip. "What if we're looking at the problem from the wrong angle?"

Tera stopped what she was doing and looked straight at Sarah, "Okay, what are you thinking then?"

"What if… What if we're the problem, and they're the solution? Hear me out," she cut off Tera before she could object. "Global climate change, pollution, over-population, resource depletion, pandemic, war, greed, racism, bigotry, and selfishness are all very real, very human problems that we've never been able to solve. The Infected don't have any of those problems. The Gammas are sterile, we've never seen a pregnant Beta or Alpha. The Alphas seem to be territorial, but they don't use weapons like we do. No guns, no nukes, no chemical or biological weapons. When they fight, it's rarely to the ****, usually it's just for dominance."

"They're also purely focused on sex," Tera pointed out. "Even the Alphas, who can control their impulses, only do so to infect others. And once they've infected everyone, and there's no more fresh targets, who says they won't get aggressive and start using our discarded weapons?"

"We haven't seen any evidence of that. They fight with their bodies, but there's no evidence they even use makeshift weapons. Besides, they heal so fast that conventional weapons aren't much use against them, unless you can kill them in one hit."

"Sarah, don't take my hope from me," Tera giggled hysterically.

"What…" Sarah bit her lip again. "What if I told you I developed a new strain of the virus?"

Tera froze, "You… Sarah, what did you do?"

"I modified two-zero-nine-dash-quebec; I factored out all the known weaknesses."

"Have you synthesized it yet?"

"Yes."

"Tested it."

Sarah bit her lip again. "Yes."

"On yourself?"

Sarah took a deep breath to calm her nerves, "Yes."

What is Tera going to do now that she knows?
