Chapter 18 by hambo hambo

Is this a joke?

Nope

"You have got to be kidding," Roi spits in disgust.

"Nope, that's how things work around here during the Night Parade," the vendor proudly declares as three more gals stop by, quickly expose themselves, and then walk away giggling, and more importantly (to Ro anyway), not thirsty. "It's one of the parade's oldest traditions. To ensure everyone can participate, young or old, rich or poor, the church banned the use of money during the parade, so instead people have to offer something else to pay for things they want."

"That's... actually kind of nice," Ro admits.

"Of course, this year, all the girls have been choosing to pay in one specific way..." The vendor sighs in approval. "It's definitely been a change for the better." He dopily smiles and sighs again. "I never knew just how big the typical woman was in this town before!"

Roi winces at his words and instinctively moves a hand over her flat chest. She's always been very sensitive about... that... issue. It's always made her feel inferior... inadequate... That's one of the reasons she became a knight in the first place, to show she wasn't a loser. But this? This hurt her more than any demon's blade ever had.

"So what'll it be?" The vendor asks with a grin on his face. "The usual payment?"

"We're leaving," Roi angrily hisses as she blinks back tears and grabs her sister by the arm. "He's mocking us."

"Roi, I don't think..." Ro tries to say as her little sister struggles to drag her away.

"Hey wait! Don't go," the vendor says. "I didn't mean to offend you! Honest! Here, take these." He pulls out two more mugs.

"We don't need your pity!" Roi declares as she moves to slap the drinks away, but thankfully Ro stops her.

"Hey, come on!" Ro says as she tries to soothe her sister. "What would Dyna say if she saw you acting like this?"

Roi stiffens up as shame washes over her. "I'm... sorry..." she says, practically **** on the words.

"It's just been a big misunderstanding," the man says. "You two are knights, right?" The vendor asks. "You guys have done a lot to keep us safe. As far as I'm concerned, you've already paid."

"Thank you," Ro says as she graciously takes the mugs and tries to undo the damage her sister's outburst has caused.

She takes a sip in front of him. "Oh wow!" Her eyes go wide as she looks back at the now-smiling vendor. He's beaming with pride. "This is really, really good! How did you make this? What did you make this with?!"

"It's an old, family recipe," he chuckles.

Ro starts guzzling hers down. "Roi, you gotta try this! It's the best thing I think I've ever drunk!"

Does Roi try it?
