Busting the Burglars Part 1

About half an hour into her shift, Evelyn got a call over her radio. "This is dispatch to all available units. We've got a report that a burglary suspect is currently hiding out at 122 Sunday Street. Suspect is believed be a Sharon Garner, female aged 18 with blonde hair, about five foot five with a slight build. Be advised suspect is currently asleep and is not aware we are responding."

"This is Bravo 121 responding."

Evelyn pulled up by the house at the same time Detective Sergeant Marcus Wolfe does, causing her to smile. The African-American detective had at one point been her training officer, and he always kept in good shape, plus was always focused on the job.

"Evie."

"Marcus."

The two approach the front door, where a middle-aged woman is waiting for them.

"You must be the police?"

"Yes ma'am. Are you the one who made the call?"

"Yes." She sighs. "My daughter's in her bedroom."

"What makes you think she's involved?"

"Well the car belongs to her brother."

"Okay ma'am. Can I get your name?"

"Mary."

"Right, can you take us to her room Mary?"

"Yeah, come with me."

As Evelyn followed Mary, she asked "Is Sharon awake?"

"No she's sleeping still."

"Does the room have a window?"

"Yes. It leads to the side."

"What about the brother?"

"He's out of town. She was minding his place for the week."

"Why not stay there then?" Marcus asked.

"Maybe she figures the car will be traced back to him."

Marcus shrugged as Mary stopped by a door.

"This it?"

Mary nodded so Marcus opened the door to be met by a face full of some sort of aerosol spray. He recoiled back as Evelyn shouted "Sheriff's Department."

Figuring that Sharon's next move would be to head out the window, Evelyn stormed into the room, finding Sharon prying the window open. She continued to sprint forward, wondering if Sharon still had the spray in hand. Sharon moved into the doorframe about to escape, when Evelyn's grabs her and throws her onto the ground.

"Put your hands behind your back."

"You're hurting me." Sharon screamed.

Evelyn repeated her demand, grabbing one of her arms. Realizing there was no escape, Sharon put her other arm behind her, allowing Evelyn to cuff her. "Okay I'm putting you under arrest. You understand you have the right to remain silent?"

"Yes."

"Okay. Stand up."

The two get onto their feet, so Evelyn led her out of the room, to which Mary asked "What's going on?"

"They hurt me ma. They hurt me." Sharon shouted whilst Evelyn looked to Marcus.

"You okay Marcus?"

"Yeah." He nodded, but Evelyn couldn't hear him over the shouting match.

"That's enough." Evelyn roared. Both women remain silent as Evelyn led Sharon outside. She then grabbed her radio. "This is Bravo 121, requesting a paramedic at 122 Sunday Street. An Officer has been sprayed in the face with some sort of chemical spray. One suspect in custody."

After patting Sharon down, Evelyn took her the back of her cruiser and then locked the doors. She then heads back inside to check on the other two, finding Marcus in the bedroom.

"You sure you good Marcus?"

"Yeah... it was pepper spray."

"Just like the academy?"

"Yeah." Marcus managed a slight chuckle in spite of his pain.

"Well, I called paramedics anyway, as a precaution."

Marcus nodded.

"So where's the mother?"

"She's in the bedroom."

Evelyn nodded before sighing. She spent the next few minutes consoling Mary whilst trying to explain what was going to happen to her daughter. Once done, she walked back to her cruiser, finding Sharon still sitting there. After opening the back door, Evelyn said "You want some water?"

Sharon remained silent.

"It's gonna be a while."

"Fine." Sharon sighed.

Evelyn smiled, hoping that she was building some rapport with her suspect. With any luck she might start talking about whoever she was working with.
