Answer Kayla's Phone Call

"Thank you for calling FSC, this is James. All our operators are busy right now...."

Kayla's voice cuts through your little joke. "James! I need you to come to the office for a little bit. I know you've got a lot on your plate today, but the invoices that you filed on Tuesday aren't showing up in the computer. I need you to come in and fix this." Her tone was somewhere between **** and demanding, though it wasn't unpleasant.

"Come on, Kayla. You've been working there for...9 years, and you can't figure out invoice management software? I've got a lot on my plate today, {if MasterShower = 0
}including the need to call a plumber and get him here before my house is inundated with an inordinate number of females and only one working shower!"
There's a moment of silence on the other end. "James...if you come and help me, I'll call Scotty, and ask him to get over there today and take a look. Deal?"
Of course... why hadn't you thought of that? Scott McCann, Kayla's brother, was a handyman, and he could fix the bathroom, no problem.
"Your sure he can get to it today, Kayla? Because if not, I have to start calling plumbers right now."
"He's here right now, fixing a flat for me. I know for a fact he's got nothing to do, because i rousted him out of bed for that! As long as you pay him, he'll do it." You'd met Scotty a few times. He was a former marine, discharged after he tore his ACL in Iraq. He'd done odd jobs, worked for FSC for a year or two until Frank had had to cut back his workforce. He was a nice kid; the "strong, silent type."

Kayla sighs on the other end. "Thank you, James. Don't worry, I'll smooth over Jenna's ruffled feathers. I'll send her a fucking fruit basket if that's what it takes."

}As you look up, Jenna is standing in the doorway with a flat expression. She's beautiful in a cream and orange dress with floral patterned skirts, summer flats and her hair in a simple ponytail.
"Let me guess...Kayla needs you." She puts an accusatory sneer into "needs." Jenna knew all about the fact that Kayla and your dad had been fucking before he died. In her eyes, Kayla was a grasper, and a homewrecker, and she never understood why you keep Kayla at the company.
"I'm sorry babe. With luck it'll only take a few minutes and then I'll be right back."
"Alright, whatever. I'm heading out." She lingers at the doorway. "Can I get a kiss? I don't know what's up with you, but you're acting strange."
You go to the doorway. With all your self-control, you manage to deliver a convincingly passionate kiss. You even roam your hands down to her ass, squeezing it tightly.
"Mmm... thank you. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine if you're fine." you reply a little cryptically.
"If something's up, you know that you can tell me, right?"
"Of course, baby. My little girl is coming home today. What do I have to be upset about?"
She looks at you dubiously. Is that...fear in her eyes? It's gone quickly.

You end the call, and look up into the frowning face of Jenna. She has her arms crossed under her breasts.
"You're going to work..." her voice is flat and monotone. She's annoyed, bordering on pissed off.

"Take Jared, or even Zoe, or both for all of me babe. They can each pitch in if they're going to be staying here."

"I'll break out the Jav." her face twitches into a small smile. Jenna swore up and down that she thought the restored muscle car was a stupid gift from your father: it was impractical and a gas guzzler, but you know the truth. Every time you rev that classic car's 6.6 L V8 engine, she gets wet. She had been attracted to all the douchey gearheads with the muscle cars in high school.
"Well....drive carefully." she turns to leave.
