Ah, the oldest of RPG genres, here we have everything from the most basic of top down rpgs to the most advanced 3d renders.

Luminaries and outliers abound in this sub-sub-genre, such as the legendary Final Fantasy series, so named because the original title was to be the last effort of a company on the brink of bankruptcy, a way of spitting in the eye of an industry that had slighted their every effort by creating a game so good that it couldn't help but be remembered... An effort so successful that it not only was indeed remembered, but saved the company and created a 15 volume franchise!

Then of course we have the Legend of Zelda, a story austensubly about the eponemous princess, but actually about a young Elvish lad named link, in his many incarnations... Except that time they turned it into a children's cartoon, when Zelda herself got to be the heroine for once! (Advised by Link's ghost, for some reason...)
