the path through the forest

You decided to take the road through the forest. It was a bit more dangerous, however it would make the journey a lot shorter. Your barmaid was a little weary, but she trusted you none the less.

During the walk she suddenly started conversation.

"You know, you never told me your name."

"It's John." You said.

"Mine is Doe." Was her reply.

"I know." You told her. "The customers at the inn always called you by name when they ordered something."

After a while, you met a shallow stream which you helped her cross. At the start of the stream Doe giggled.

She then gave an expression that betrayed disappointment.

You pulled your boots off and walked through the stream barefooted.

This made Doe happy again.

Later on you reached a small landslide. You first went to the bottom, then offered her to come after you. In case the slide was to steep for her to stop, you could catch her. Secretly, that was what you were hoping for.
Fortune smiled upon you today, cause your barmaid kept running faster and faster down the landslide. Eventually it became evening and after you had set up your camp. She was talking about one of her days at the tavern while the two of you were eating rations you had prepared.

After another conversation you suggested to go to bed.

"So won't wild animals come dangerously close to us if we both are asleep?" She wondered.

"Not as long as the campfire is burning." You explained.

"Oh, ok then."

As an immediate response, Doe threw a few extra sticks of wood on the campfire and then joined you in your sleeping bag.

"Lets hope for a peaceful night." She said.

Instead of agreeing with her you smiled and said the following.

"Aww, and I was hoping for a wild night."

"John, oh, I knew you weren't to be trusted."

But she still smiled when she said that.

"As punishment I won't be facing you while I sleep."

She then turned her back at you.
