Chapter 23

Does Jane admit the truth, or continue the lie?

Jane comes clean

Jane could feel the guilt eating away at her as she looked at Jack, the tattooed woman angrily glaring her down as Miranda waited patiently. The more Jane thought about it, the more she realized what a monster she had been. She also knew that this wasn't fair to either Jack or Miranda, and instead of being a good friend and explaining the situation, she had used the situation to her advantage to play on the rebound.

She felt lower than pond scum.

Taking a deep breath, Jane sighed and hung her head. "It's true."

"There, Jack. Now kindly remove your carcass from our -" Miranda began, only to stop as she realized what Jane had just said. "What?"

"I said that it's true."

"See?! I told you, didn't I?!" Jack snapped.

"J-Jane." Miranda began with a chuckle, not wanting to believe what she just heard. "You don't have to lie to try and keep peace between us. Jack was the one who did something wrong, and you -"

"It was an imported Krogan rum." Jane explained softly. "After my embarrassing streak, I had EDI look up the **** content of the drink. There was enough in there to knock three elephants out cold, so you could imagine what it could do to two seasonal drinkers."

"Forgive me, Commander, but I do not recall doing said actions." EDI's voice called out.

"Have you ever wondered why your memory banks are missing that day specifically?" Jane asked. After twenty seconds of no response, she said, "I thought so."

"I was going to hunt down Jack and try to get her back," Jane continued, "but then you arrived. When you told me what happened, I was about to inform you why she would've done that. And then you kissed me and... Well, you remember the rest."

"Why didn't you tell me?" Miranda asked, stunned as she desperately tried to find any evidence that Jane was pulling a sick and twisted joke.

"After our night together..." Jane said, "I was just so angry with Liara for breaking my heart, and you were better in bed than she ever was. I couldn't help myself, I needed this. But there wasn't a day that went by where I didn't regret not telling you anything, especially when I fell in love with you. I... I'm sorry, Miranda."

Jane let out another sigh as a tear rolled down her cheek. Strangely, Miranda remained quiet for several seconds, causing the commander to finally look up to see Miranda's face...

Which was a combination of hurt, sadness, and white hot rage.

What's next?
