This Isn't New York

We were back to the hotel in time for breakfast, but only Badger managed to eat much. As for me, I just had a cup of coffee and picked at a bagel.

“So, what now?” Badger asked, proving that Mister Bland remained as constant as gravity, even when the rest of us were in a funk.

Maria, who seemed to be taking this the worst, just waved a dismissive hand, whilst pressing her forehead into her other hand and staring down at a plate of egg white that she had just pushed around in circles.

“Do we at least know who did it?” I asked.

MJ took on a contemplative tone and began thinking out loud, “There are five major players right now, ‘El Viejo Guardia’, the ‘Hijos de México’, ‘Los Omega’, the ‘Caballeros del Exceso’, and obviously ‘El Dominio’. We can rule out the last one and probably Viejo Guardia.”

“It seems the most like Los Omega, but I haven’t heard of them fighting with El Dominio and I can’t rule out the others,” Badger added.

“It really could be Los Hijos or Los Caballeros. My gut tells me that it wasn’t Los Omega, though it certainly would fit their modus operandi,” Maria added, still staring at her uneaten eggs.

“So, if it is Los Hijos or Los Caballeros, where do we go next?” Badger once again questioned.

“Los Caballeros de Exceso tend to gather in night clubs, raves, un delirio, or whatever they’re called these days. If they were involved, that’s where we’d find the shooters, though I don’t know where they would keep captives.

“If it’s Los Hijos de México, they could be anywhere. They pull their recruits from the general populace and you might find them anywhere from the apartment above a bakery to some random warehouse, which doesn’t help us at all,” David added, dejectedly.

“Can we, I don’t know, pull traffic cameras or canvas the neighborhood?” I asked at a loss.

That made several people chuckle or snort at my naivety.

“This is Mexico, not New York. Don’t count on traffic cameras here and if you think the neighbors in that place are going to do anything other than turning a blind eye to what’s going on, you’re badly out of your depth.”
