Chapter 26 by Chip_Arranger

Saturday arrives

As does your departure

"Ugh, it's way too early for this", Amy said. as the two of you packed your bags in the back of her car at 6 AM.

"Well, it'd be nice to beat the traffic that'll be leaving this area", you said.

"Whatever you say. You're driving, by the way", she responds. "I'm gonna go back to sleep".

"Fine with me", you accepted as you got in the driver's seat of the car.

You started driving with the GPS giving you directions. Usually you drove with the radio playing, but you didn't want to wake up Amy. So you just decided to drive in silence for a while, leaving the swampy lowlands and moving into the mountains. The silence didn't really bother you though, because the fact that Amy was willing to fall asleep with you at the wheel really showed her level of trust in you. You also spent some of the time just thinking about the whole idea too. It's not every day that someone got to spend an entire week at their girlfriend's house.

Around the time you crossed the border into Tennessee, Amy finally woke up. You had been driving for a little under 5 hours at that point, and were beginning to get a little hungry.

"Good morning, sleepyhead", you said as she started stretching.

"Where are we?" she asked as she opened her eyes.

"Not really sure", you answered, "but do you want to look for some food to eat?"

"That'd be great", Amy responded.

You pulled off the freeway, found a local diner, and stopped the car. After the two of you got out, Amy took your hand as you two walked through the parking lot towards the front door.

"Good morning", the waitress said with a very thick Southern drawl. "Table tor two?"

"Yes please", you said.

"Right this way, y'all".

The two of you walked to the table where the waitress led you and slid into chairs facing one another.

"I take it you both are escapin' the storm?" she said.

"Yeah, we're both from the coast, and we were told to evacuate", Amy responded.

"Well I hope for your sakes that everything turns out just fine in the end", the waitress said. "I'll give you a minute to decide on your food".

With that, she walked away as you and Amy looked through your menus for a short while.

"Isn't this kinda funny?" Amy suddenly asked.

"Isn't what funny?" you responded.

"This whole situation we've found ourselves in", she elaborated. "I mean, we just started our relationship and now you're spending around a week at my place".

"I guess it's funny when I think about it", you responded. "I'm not upset about it though."

"Me neither", she agreed with a yawn. "God, I was so tired this morning".

"I could tell, you didn't wake up for like five hours on the drive here", you said.

"Guess that means I'll have a lot of energy tonight", she said.

Before you could figure out what that meant, the waitress returned.

"So, y'all ready to order?" she said, pulling out a pad of paper and a pen.

The two of you placed your orders, ate your food, paid the check, and headed back to the car.

"Guess you've already met my parents, so at least that step's out of the way", Amy said as she sat down in the passenger seat.

Ugh, you hadn't really thought that much about her parents being there.

"Yeah, but they might look at me differently because of our new situation", you responded.

"Don't be so worried, they've always loved when you've been over beforehand!" she answered with optimism.

You started moving again. Once you got back on the freeway, you rested your right hand on the center console like usual, but this time, Amy took your hand as she gave you directions.
