Chapter 6 by 0hffe 0hffe

Did he read the instructions right?

PUZZLE BOX: May As Well Get Interrupted

Luckily for him, it worked. He held his finger over the label and a few seconds later, the light warping, space distorting process of the box rearranging itself came and went.

Unfortunately for Hank, it settled into another slide puzzle. Though this one seemed to be an image that needed to be arranged. It looked like someone's face was a big part of it, individual tiles being dedicated to each eye. Eyes that he realized looked like Genevieve's. Besides that, there were hands that looked like they were pressed against something fleshy and soft and then another tile which depicted the tip of a dick that looked suspiciously like his own, cradled between...

''Oh, right'' He said, realising what the image was supposed to depict. being a bit more confident he at least knew where to begin with this one, he started rearranging the tiles, almost getting it right away. Having assembled the part of the image depicting her eager and sultry stare. However, the bottom half was still a jumbled mess. So, he kept on moving tiles.

''Is somebody in here?''

Shit! That was the voice of his neighbour. He'd gotten himself so distracted with the box that he completely forgot where he was. And now he had to think fast.

Not wanting to let anyone see that he was messing with stuff from the house, much less given what was currently depicted on top of the box, he whipped off his jacket and started to wrap it around the box. Stopping as he looked at the countdown. He was going to need to restart again. He couldn't sit here and finish the puzzle and he couldn't get out of the house in the sub minute time he had left. Hopefully another three minutes would be enough to get out and then probably restart it again.

He held his finger on the 'RESTART' label and hoped that the machine resetting itself wouldn't sound so loud as to make it too obvious what he was doing down here. Then, with the box reset, he stuffed it into his balled up jacket and made his way up the stairs back into the kitchen.

''Who are you and what are you doing in my house?'' He flinched at the sound of the old gypsy lady's raised voice.

''Sor...uhh...I...'' He tripped over his words as she stared daggers at him while his mind reeled for a possible explanation for what he was doing.

''I was, uhh, just walking by...'' He started, his voice nervous and shaky. He cleared his throat ''I was just walking by when I saw that the door was open. I just thought I'd check everything was okay''

He thought he saw a sly smirk spread across her face, but her features quickly softened to an apologetic look.

''Of course, so sorry. I guess in my old age I'm forgetting things like that. Thank you for checking on me. Would you like something to drink?''

He mentally high-fived himself for actually getting her to believe that line and then remembered he was on a time limit

''No thanks. I've gotta go do... things'' He couldn't even come up with a lie to tell.

''Oh nonsense. Here, take a seat'' She said, snatching his jacket out of his arms.

For a moment, his heart sunk to the pit of his stomach, knowing for sure that any hope of her really believing his story was dead if she caught him stealing from her. The moment that box fell out of his jacket, he was done.

But, that moment didn't arrive. The old lady draped his jacket over the back of a chair and pulled it out, inviting him to sit.

He complied, trying not to make it too obvious as he double checked he inside and outside of the jacket. Not having a clue where the box went.

''What would you like. I've got juice, soda-pop, milk...''

''Juice would be fine'' he answered, a bit too eagerly.

She smiled and poured a glass, then sat down across from him at the kitchen table and began to tall him how thankful she was that there were fine young men like him in this town, willing to go out of their way to make sure an old lady was safe.

Tick-Tock
