No harm done.
Glancing at Anna, "No harm done," You say firmly.
Taking this as a prompt to continue, Eve quickly adds, "Our last master was unkind to my sister, he would take her to his room, or into the basement at night, and she'd cry a lot."
Meanwhile, Anna's eyes are downcast, her body stiff as she seems to ponder the floor near her feet. You can't help but notice the look of shame in her features.
Seemingly oblivious to her sister's reaction, Anna forges on, "Are you going to make my sister cry too?"
Her tone pulls at your heartstrings, making you feel momentarily protective of both girls. A large part of you wants to put your arms around them, to promise to protect them.
Instead, you pause, collecting your thoughts and carefully weighing your options before you answer.
