Chapter 27 by DubiousSintax

Does anyone else cross Lisa's path on her way to the store?

No, Lisa goes shopping

A rusty bell clattered loudly above her as Lisa entered the store, pleased to find it empty aside from the shopkeeper, a wiry looking woman wearing a plain apron over a simple dress with her hair pinned back. "Welcome miss..." she greeted ambivalently from behind her counter. "Please holler if you need some help."

Lisa nodded her thanks then set about browsing the goods, noting there was not a huge selection but that what was there seemed decent quality and fresh. She picked out a few things, some flour and salt, some vegetables and a little bit of coffee. She also found a wire scrubbing brush that she could think of several uses for, so she snatched that up and took her haul to the counter.

The woman eyed her curiously as she tallied up her total, eventally asking, "New in town are you? I haven't seen you in here before." she looked about ten, maybe fifteen years older than Lisa. Not an old woman by any stretch but her thin frame and stony face gave her a harsh appearance, as if she had been through much in her time. Her tone was civil however, if a little bit pompous.

"Oh, yes... first time here. Actually I have only been in town a few days, maybe a week. I'm staying with Mr Usher." Lisa explained, the woman's eyes widening as she nodded at Lisa's ring.

"A married woman shacked up with Harry Usher... how scandalous!" the shopkeep crowed, "You do know about his reputation don't you?" she asked, leaning in conspiritorially. "Even if he doesn't **** you, half the town will assume he did. Your name will be mud Mrs..."

Lisa blushed profusely. "Mrs Usher actually," she coughed almost under her breath at which the woman took a moment in stunned silence before guffawing directly into Lisa's face. She quickly rounded the counter to get a better look at the poor woman, Lisa's skimpy outfit confirming everything the shopkeep had assumed and more.

Grinning at the poor girl's plight she clucked her tongue, circling Lisa. "Oh dear oh dear... fell into his web did you darling? Old bugger must be beside himself with glee."

Lisa's blush intensified as her discomfort grew and before the woman could say much more Lisa had tossed her coins onto the counter, scooped up her items and rushed out the door. The shopkeeper's cackling laughter rang in her ears as she ran back towards her home, only slowing as she approached in an effort to collect herself before presenting herself to her husband.

Little did she know that the shopkeeper, Mrs Grady was the biggest gossip in town. Soon everyone would know all about her status as Mrs Usher, the Gunsmith's wife.

Home again, is Usher pleased to see her?
