Chapter 26 by DubiousSintax
Who does Lisa encounter?
Beth Connors
Lisa had barely taken a few determined paces towards the general store before she heard somone approaching, calling her name.
"Lisa, Lisa!" shouted Beth as she rushed towards her, coming to a stop and blabbering through strained breaths. "There you are! We were so worried about you - I thought the Black Lynchers got you! Oh, it's so good to see you..." the teenage girl slowed as she properly took Lisa in, noticing her rather dishevelled appearance, her dirty makeshift top and extremely revealing skirt, if you could call it that. Her expression went from relief to confusion, then disgust and she wrinked her nose as the aromatic aura that surrounded Lisa wafted over her. "Uhh, are you alright?" asked the girl, looking at Lisa wide-eyed, "What happened to you?"
Lisa smiled warmly back at Beth, "Oh hey there darling... Beth right? No need to be worrying over me, I've just been helping out Harry, that's all."
"Harry? You mean disgusting old Mr Usher?" Beth shuddered in revulsion. "But you were gonna help us against the Lynchers, you promised!"
"Oh yes, sorry I forgot all about that. I was so caught up in my... work that I plum forgot about it." Lisa said, somewhat vacantly, much to Beth's annoyance.
"Work? What has that pig got you doing for him anyway?" the teen looked Lisa over and realisation crept into her expression. "Ewww, never mind." she continued screwing up her face. " You know he wants to steal our stables don't you? Now that Pa is dead he thinks he can just take what's mine and Billy's and ain't nobody gonna do nothing." the girl grit her teeth, "That asshole's got another thing comin."
"Hey, hey..." Lisa cooed, "He's not so bad, truly. Let me have a word to him... I'm sure it's just a misunderstanding, really. I'll put in a good word for you, he'll listen to me, honestly."
Beth snorted, "Hah, don't bother... I've already seen what little worth your word is. We'll be just fine without your help." she spat the last word as she stalked away, looking back over her shoulder at Lisa with a look of utter contempt.
Lisa stood in stunned silence for a moment, the realisation of just how much she had let Beth and her brother down sinking in. She resolved to help the kids - she had to make it up to Beth. When she got home she would speak with Harry. Maybe they could find some odd jobs for the pair to do around the place, help them earn some extra cash.
With a hopeful air she carried on towards the store, taking in the sights of the town for the first time in days. A few locals were going about their daily business but the town seemed quiet. It was still early though, the saloon didn't even appear to be open yet. Hopefully that meant the freshest goods were still hers for the taking.
Does anyone else cross Lisa's path on her way to the store?
