Chapter 28
by
TheUnfathomable
What oh what could a skeleton dream of?
Long forgotten memories.
As you sit in complete darkness, you hear two muffled voices. You can't make out a word they say to each other, but there seems to be a rather calm debate between them. After a bit more deliberation, they seem to reach an agreement.
All at once, your vision returns. But it didn't fully, not as your vision, anyway. You can see through two different sets of eyes, one on your left, and one on your right. Despite your divided visibility, you still have proper depth perception and non-blurred vision in each.
Your left view is somewhere you cannot recognize. It is deep in a peaceful looking grotto, with a series of unmarked graves all in a formation in front of you. You get the sense that this is a sorrowful sight, and whatever you are seeing through is currently grieving.
Your right eye is instead on a high balcony overlooking a city. Far in the distance, beyond great walls you can see almost endless sands in every direction. The structure this view is standing just outside of is grand, standing on what seems to be a great hill or something of the like and going higher than any other building by a very large margin. You notice this view was looking towards the skies, almost expectantly.
You hear a voice in the left side of your head, just behind your viewpoint but not far back enough to feel like it's from behind you, "Are we certain he should see? As they said, most of them went mad." The voice was calm, smooth, and disciplined, it gave the sense of someone who has spent their life honing an art of some form.
A different voice replies from the same location on your other side, "They were not as prepared. We can make sure he's fine, after all, we didn't go mad, did we?" This voice was more cunning, yet demanding, the voice of a man who lived high but knew how to keep that position, a deserving lord.
The first voice responds with slight humor, "Some would disagree with that assessment. Regardless, we did not have the time to. It wasn't that long after that the temple was finished, after all." They paused for but a moment, "But, I do agree, he needs to see this. To see what they meant."
you feel a slight anger in the voice to your right, "And he needs to see what is out there. How we failed... how I failed..." After this the voices were at last silent once more, leaving you confused as to what exactly just happened.
You begin to notice that both of your visions have begun to move. It isn't that the viewpoints are moving, but more that you were made aware that time had been paused in them but moments before. With this interesting development, you suppose you can only wait to see what happens.
Nothing much happens for the first while, the left view continuously mourning at the graves and the right continuing to wait for something. You can tell they are nowhere close to each other by their surroundings, yet you know that whatever you are about to see, is their two views of the same moment.
The first to have something occur was the left view. You can hear someone walk up from behind and stop just to the side of your view. They stand there for a moment until you hear them sit themselves down next to you, making you realize this perspective is on the ground in a sort of prayer stance.
This silent second person simply stays there, a somewhat comforting yet somewhat annoying presence for a great amount of time. In the end, they let out a sigh, and place something upon the ground next to whoever's eyes you were seeing through before leaving.
After that, something happens on the right half. Someone opens a door to the balcony from behind, though your view does not move to look at them. A feminine voice speaks, "So, this will be it then? You won't come inside, so I guess that means it is the time you were speaking of?"
Your carrier spoke back after a growling sigh, "Yes. Tonight is the night. I get to see what my decisions have led my future to. How my dynasty will be written, for the rest of time. Just what it is I gave my devotion to all that time ago."
The woman walks up and places her hand upon his shoulder, seemingly trying to comfort him. "You know it doesn't have to go that way, right? You have a choice-"
For the first time one of your perspectives moves. It is slightly jarring, more for the fact that you expect the other to move as well but it simply doesn't. You don't have to get too adjusted to this, as your right perspective only moves in order to stare at the speaker from the corner of his eye.
She is a rather regally dressed Lizardfolk woman. You would guess her to have just reached adulthood, or perhaps be just shy of reaching it. She was wearing regal yet dull clothing, indicating someone in a influential house that was not a core member of it.
You could feel anger within him as he reprimanded her, "Do you think you must have a speak with me about how I should 'do the right thing'? Do you think this a question of my morality? Believe me, no matter what horrid tales are told, I did not want this. If I had any chances to remove what I had done, I would have taken them oh so long ago."
You see the woman recoil slightly and take her hand off of his shoulder. This seems to make him regretful, and his anger calms down as you feel his face soften. You feel him close his eyes for a moment, though your view remains unobstructed. Clearly if you were seeing what he could, he had magical vision.
Your view once again returns disorienting to the sky as he speaks again, "I am sorry. You did not deserve that. You did not deserve much of what you have gotten from your life. I only hope that your own actions will allow you to escape the fate I have been chained to."
You sense the woman hesitate for a few moments, before he simply nods, and she leaves the balcony the way she came. He lets out a large sigh before talking one last time to himself, "Please, oh greatest one, either grant mercy on my lineage, or ensure there will be no enemies to tell the tale."
This signaled a great change in both perspectives. You can begin to hear otherworldly whispers in both perspectives, echoing around just far enough to be untraceable. They begin to harmonize into one long chant, before silencing themselves with a final shout in a language you cannot decipher.
At this moment, the sky changes, a great rift forming along the center of the highest point in the sky. It rips itself open, making a tear until it shapes itself into the vague shape of an eye, a strange pulsating power behind it completing the image.
The eye searches around, before at different moments resting on both of your viewpoints. It lingers with a sense of approval on the right, and disgust on the left, clearly having a favor of the two. You can see it snap to look at many more individuals with pulsating emotions before taking a more neutral position that gives it the sense it is watching all.
One lone voice speaks through both sets of ears, "I have woken. I have looked. I have learned. You of this plane, know thee do not stand unviewed. So few, do I sense recognition from. Fewer than were meant to be. It matters so little, I care not." The pupil of the eye sharpens into a slit, portraying hostility. "For those who have dared stand against my inevitability, know that your actions have been judged. For I will decide what stories lie from hence until the end of all. None will remember you, nor where you are laid, when the times have passed. Know you have chosen the worst of all fates. You have chosen to stand against the champion of the greatest being to have ever be in the times that passed and the times to come. You stand against the Daemon Emperor, Tormakocx, the Daemon of Eternity!"
You were beginning to grasp just what you may be viewing as the sky turned red across the world.
