Chapter 10 by Cantalope Cantalope

Do you personally rescue Bethany, or will you leave it to Cullen?

Leave it to Cullen.

"Cullen? How quickly can we dispatch troops to the area?"

"Provided we can get a message to the reinforcements en route to the Free Marches before they set sail from the Storm Coast? 3 days at best."

"Better time than we could make. See that it is done immediately."

Cullen nodded, leaving for his study. Marian Hawke let out a breath of relief, though her countenance remained worried, "Thank you, Herald." She coughed and cleared her throat, eyes watering from her ministrations to you. You send her back to her favorite place overlooking the courtyard until you have further need of her, which you suspect will be as soon as your inquisitorial business is done for the day, and continue un-fucking Thedas one judgement at a time.

1 week later:

You survey the spoils of war from Bethany's rescue grimly: no less than 32 young women, most of them likely mages, and all of them quite appealing to behold. You'd been overjoyed to read the report until you reached the true problem: all of the women, including Bethany Hawke, were in some kind of magically induced coma and completely unresponsive.

"Fuck."

Dorian nodded in agreement beside you, "It is a conundrum. I assume you have no ideas regarding how to fix them?"

You give him a narrow look and he rubs his chin innocently, "Not really... but from your tone I hope you do."

He grinned, "You know me so well. Obviously they are enchanted, I would hazard a guess that their consciousness is trapped in the fade. Which raises the unusual question of: why haven't they been possessed yet?"

He made a good point. If they really were all, or even mostly, mages who's minds were trapped by demons then their bodies really should have been snatched by now. Even if it had something to do with the mind agreeing to the possession, you seriously doubted they were all strong willed enough to last this long without losing a single one.

You turn back to the rows of **** women, "Do we know what the red templars were doing with them?"

"I seriously doubt the templars did this on their own, this has the scent of blood magic all over it. I regret to inform you that my countrymen are most likely involved."

"Venatori blood magic... why couldn't they just take the ugly ones?"

Dorian does not answer, correctly assuming your question is rhetorical. You stand there for a moment before Dorian breaks the silence, "So... I assume we're going into the Fade to bring them back?"

"That's ridiculously risky, we have supplies that need to be managed, troops that need to be ordered-"

"Am I to take that as a y-?"

"-of course we're going into the Fade to bring them back, are you kidding? I don't even have to physically do anything for this one, I'll just take a nap. Did you really think I'd turn down this many beautiful women, mages no less, from the cause?"

"Not as soon as I saw them for myself."

You laugh, honestly amused by the snarky mage. You weren't grandstanding either, you were genuinely looking forward to this. Physically you weren't much to look at but your will and magic was quite strong, which was all that mattered in the Fade. Well, also not being a gullible idiot but that was a given. You also had a feeling the thrones power would follow you in and you were almost childishly excited to see what you could do with it.

You send what mages you have on hand to begin the preparations, the only decision left to be made was who you planned to bring with you into the Fade.

Who do you bring on your mission to the Fade?
