Just One Little Spell

Luna was getting tired of Mary's judgmental bullshit and Mrs. Anderson provided the perfect escape.

On any given day, Mrs. A felt like more of a mother than Luna's actual mother. Luna couldn't count the amount of times she had come over to Mary's house, her eyes burning with tears after some fight with her mother only to have Mrs. A make her an extra thick hot-chocolate with whipped cream and pat her back as she vented.

Luna knew Mrs. A would value the book even if her daughter didn't. It was such a cool find and Mary's distaste for it seemed flabbergasting. Hell, it went against the pair's entire aesthetic.

"Mrs. A, check this out!" Luna said, holding up the book.

"Ooo, that looks gnarly. What is it?"

"Supposedly," Luna dragged this word out as she spoke it. "It's a spell book. I found it in our school library today. Can you believe they would have something like this lying around?"

"Mackleroy High is full of surprises. I remember finding some weird stuff there too when I was a student eons ago. Can I see?"

Luna handed Mrs. A the book, feeling a strange emptiness as it passed out of her fingers. Something about the book's touch was exhilarating.

Mrs. A cracked the book open and started reading through the pages, raising her eyebrow at some of the passages, biting her lip at others. Finally, she stopped at a particular page and snorted.

"Directed aura, essence of feminine lust," Mrs. A. said. "Sounds pretty naughty."

Both her and Luna shared a loud giggle. Luna noticed Mary look over from the corner of her eye. She could sense her friend's frustration and muted resentment.

"Well now you have to try it out," Luna said.

"Me? Hell no. You give it a try first!" Mrs. A said.

"But you're the adult in the room."

"Pshh, your eighteen, that cover doesn't fly anymore. Ask Mary."

"Sure thing, Mom," Mary added, her voice flat.

"Fine," Luna said. "I'll be the guinea pig."

She took the book back, relishing the sensation of the warm leather on her skin. Next, she began reading the description of the spell.

"Aura directed. Casts a temporary acceleration of feminine lust energy on the focused target. Speak verses with a direct mind and a clear target. Looks like I'll be sending it your way, Mrs. A!"

For a moment, Luna's voice caught in her throat. What if it actually worked? When Mary and her chanted in the supply closet, she swore she felt something coming. Then the spell had ended and the closet was back to normal.

"Well shit," Mrs. A said. "Oh well. It doesn't sound that bad anyways. Have at it, Luna."

Luna began to read the verse of the trying her best to focus on Mrs. A. However, she couldn't shake the feeling that Mary was giving her the stink eye from the couch. She felt compelled to look backwards and fought the urge, knowing it would only make things more awkward. She hated when the fought.

As Luna read the words out loud, she felt a steady, rising tension as if the air around her had become electric. She hit the last verse and felt something crackle through the air. It made the hair on her arms and neck stand on end.
