Chapter 16 by TheSpectator TheSpectator

Leave the room?

I probably should...

You take your leave - letting Maple prepare for her day. You start a contract that you were supposed to finish that day. It was best not to leave these things untouched for too long. Unfinished contracts usually left a black spot on your record. Granted, there wasn't that many people that would check the background on most of the contractors here, but if people reported shoddy work on your end then it wouldn't play that well once you left.

...And so, you continued your day doing work. It wasn't until much later you were freed up enough take a day off. It was now the weekend, and weather had steadily gotten worse over the nights and morning. It snowed once, giving a sheet of white that was an inch thick on the ground and roofs. Birds still chirped, and people still moved along, but you found yourself less...willing to go outside. Your uniform was a solid dark color that stuck out too much in the snow. You left prints everywhere you went. Your gun's trigger guard conflicted with gloves. And in general, being outside was just unpleasant.

Even after the initial snow had melted, it left everything muddy and sticky outside, and by now it started to rain, which twisted the weather into a gloomy wet mess. The forest you once admired and looked forward to, was now a nightmare to travel in, and threatened to take your life. Was the weather always like this? Perhaps all those nuclear bombs ruined that too.

Like most of your interactions, you found Maple in the tavern when cleaning off your boots in front of the tavern. It was a little later in the night than usual. You thought the only night owl around here was Delilah, and even she had turned in for the night after you both shared a few drinks and a small conversation. Delilah was not looking forward to the change in weather, and shared your discomfort for the mountain's winter. Everything, she said, can be expected to slow down drastically until late Spring.

Maple smiled and whispered her greetings to you. You did the same, but didn't worry about being heard like she did. When you talked the same way you usually did, she opened up too and seemed to relax. She perked up a bit as you chatted. You noticed she was holding onto something in her hands, and had a bag over her shoulder. When you ask what she's doing, she smiles a little bit and tilts her head to the side, becoming slightly bashful as she tries to explain she couldn't sleep. She sees your boots and brush, commenting that it seems you're restless too. You nod, but tell her you're usually up this late anyway.

"Oh, maybe you and I could go swimming then?" She offers.

You tell her the local hot spring was probably closed, but she giggles. "No, no! There's a indoor pool here too. A little distance, but it's open all night. I don't go unless it's late, because it's pretty popular."

You rack your brain. You never remembered a pool being around here, but you weren't exactly here for all the local getaways, so you aren't too surprised you didn't hear about it. Maple steps forward and grabs your hand. "I don't work at all tomorrow, so we can swim all night!"

There's nothing else going on with you, so you decide to take her invitation.

Go swimming
